Help no 4WD

Long Story Short:
2000 F150 SCAB 4x4
Just changed all Ball Joints adn Tie rods and Upper COntrol Arms
Driver side Hub Hub Bearing and CV Axle Driver Side
New Tires and Wheels
Allignment

Went to the Mud Hole and all started great...Til I got Stuck

Tried to get pulled out Loud Pop On Pass side Front End
Front Tires stopped pulling
Got out and there is no snapping or popping while in 4WD Transfer still engages and gears down

However after cleaning it up I hooked a chain to a tree and then to the reese hitch. Put in 4WD pulled chain tight (5 ft or so) and got in the gas.
Rear end pulls great but no pull in the front.

Once again I have driven roughly 50 miles in 2wd and there is no weird pulling poping nor smells. when in 4wd everything acts nonrmal, but the front is nont pulling.

Question 1 how far fwd do I need to go before the front end engages?
Question 2 tearinng it down tonight after rechecking with the tree if it is still bad where should I start?

Thanks guys...Also posting in The Offroad forum

No, there are 2 of them located behind the battery on the firewall. The vaccuum lines attach to them and they activate the 4x4. If you switch from 2x4 to 4x4 you won't hear it clicking at all if they aren't working. I had to replace one on my 97 F150, the one closest to the fender went bad when I got temporarily stuck. My local dealer keeps that one in stock because they go out allot, took all of 5 minutes to replace.

Thats probably where I would start. I can't remember exactly how much it cost but I think it was around $40 for the part. Beyond that I'm don't know allot about the systems as I never had to tear into mine. And I traded it in 2 weeks ago so I can't look at it either.

AH so does the vacume line run to the diff? I had a friend tell me that on top of the Diff there is a nipple with a vacume line running to it that may have come off?

I think it runs to the diff but I'm unsure, it would make sense that it goes there though. Come to think of it you may want to check your vaccuum lines first to make sure they haven't come off or cracked like your friend says.

If I am not mistaken, there is a vacuum motor at the front differential that the vacuum lines connect to. That motor is what engages the front axle. The lever that it operates sometimes get sticky and the motor can't move it. Take the cover off and clean/lube the mechanism. Good luck!

The vacuum lines connect to the vacuum motor. Ford's name for the vacuum motor is Shift Motor. When troubleshooting a won't engage problem the service manual says to remove the Shift Motor Cover. You should be able to make some sense out of this when you get under there to check it out. Good luck!

That made perfect sence once I got under it andn started looking at the vacume setup...Everything is working correctly as far as engaging and disengaging the front end ... then started on the right side and evreything looked good then moved to the left side and low and behold there it is a brand new CV axle that had snapped at the diff. I think I found the problem and after the clean up it is going back to the shop that put it in. I know they are easy to install but I want the free fix. This axle is 4 days old. Thanks for the help.

Congrats on finding the problem. That can be the most frustrating thing to find it.

Off topic, working on my Mustang right now and I miss being able to crawl under the truck without jacking it up.

yep I called him on it today and he said to drive it to him and he would repair it. The last time I drove a broken CV to him I ended up replacing the hub hub bearing and breaks. I told him to order the new CV and I would bring him the broken one. I already made that mistake once. Anyhow its not like it is that big of a deal to fix. I am just gald the Diff and Transfer are ok. Those are a tad bit too much money to go diggin in to. Oh and lesson learned STAY OUT OF THE MUD.(unless your built for it)
