I started at 9:00 and finished at about 6:00 pm. Everything went according to plan. As expected the hardest part was maneuvering the axle into place. Having the rotors and hubs on the replacement made it very difficult. As the hubs would flop back and forth the center of gravity would change so I ended up tieing the hubs in place. I used three jacks and the transmission jack I rented was not very useful. Here is the point of failure. I think that this piece is designed to shear like this. In the next few days I'll take the cover off the diff and pull the pieces out.
I got a great deal on the replacement. $650 for an entire front axle that had 55000 miles on it. Included hub and rotor. The picture below explains why it can't be rebuilt.
