Do you have any UOA tests on your oil.
I run 5w30 all year ext drain. Iam looking
to change to a 40w. Seems the schaeffer 5w40
might be my choice. It has the highest tbn that
i can find in the 40w.
Here is the thing. Every 40w i have used in the past
and uoa's that i see of others the 40w has sheered to
just about a 30w by 5k on the oil. This is from the heui system.
The 30w oil i use is still a 30w with 10K on it.
Just looking into if i can find some gains for the first 5K of oil use.
Bill
Sorry Bill, no UOA's.
You caught me...I've put it off long enough LOL! Gotta send in some samples. BTW: I don't go past 7K on the oil changes.
You using rotella?
Schaeffers is good choice, I've heard nothing but good about them.
That's interesting, sheering to 30w after 5K. Do you think that a concern for our HUEI's? I like the 5w for cold starts.

Amsoil 5w30.
You cannot beat it for cold starts and running while still cold.
(time it takes to get to opt temp)
From what i see over the years is that the PSD heui system
hates 40wt. Its not sheering the 30wt. Most uoa's i see with the 40
its beaten down to about a 30 by about 5K. Trucks vary with use.
Ever notice a psd runs better with just an oil change?
If i run the 40, power and mpg starts to fall off with miles on oil.
The 30 stays about the same with same miles on oil.
The oil wt does with out a doubt have an effect on the heui system.
Good info, I don't pay close attention to the MPG's but, My next oil change will be 5w30 or 10w30 syn. Maybe even 0w if they make it for a diesel.
I'm running 0w30 syn in my wife's 4x4 Trailblazer EXT. 5.3 V8, 24MPG hiway, 16-20 city.. it scoots pretty good too.
I cannot get the 30 to make the same power/mpg vs 40
new. Its the tunes in the heui. I have leaned the motor some while using
the 30 and have found some of the losses back.
Iam really tossing around the idea of a 50/50 blend of 5/30 and 5/40.
(syn should mix) Home blend 35wt
Just have not had the guts to do it yet!
Bill, Can you explain that chart. It's way over my head...Not unusal. LOL!
I have disassembled a few hi mile engines that were run on dino oil and were very clean. Probably from regular oil changes. The wear was evident though. The syn oil engines seem to show less wear.
My grandfather and his team at Shell Oil developed Rotella. Guess which oil I run? Yep, Rotella 15W-40. Pennzoil is really bad about building up slugge in an engine. I steer people away from it as much as I can. I reccommend Rotella or Motorcraft Diesel oil.
Pennzoil and Quakerstate are made ( owned by) Shell Oil and are made from the same crude oil. I was just meeting with one of the oil engineers last Saturday and he clarified this for me.
Is Amsoil syn 15w-40 better than Rotella like the Amsoil web site says about having less wear n tear on the engines.
One article I read a guy went 409k miles on his Mack w/o oil change.
What do you all think?
I have been using Esso 0/40 synth I have never had my oil checked so can,t tell you if it is doing good or bad for my engine but know for sure it starts better in the cold and seems to warm up faster too.
