On the way home today i heard a little squeak sounded kinda like a sucking sound. it only lasted for a few seconds, then stopped. drove another five miles and started to hear a grinding noise so i let off the throttle and coasted down to 40mph, i pushed the gas a little, seemed fine for about 5 seconds same noise, did the same thing again and again at lower speeds (i think for each gear). anyway had to get towed home. the forward gear clutch pack was replaced about 11k miles ago. now it won't move in forward or reverse and makes that same grinding noise. my father-in-thinks that it might be the input shaft.
He also thinks that maybe a vacuum line could have came loose i'll check that after i eat.
so i think after sleeping on it i'm gonna hire a local shop to put put aftermarket part in and rebuild the SOB. the job comes with a 2-yr/24000 mile warranty, so what questions should i ask them before and after and what stuff should they put in it?
They are gonna put an 'upgraded torque converter' and 'upgraded parts inside the transmission' whatever that means. the parts/labor/warranty is going to cost $2121.50.
I would make sure the TC is a triple disc billet face at least, ask them to put the sonnax valve kit in, red eagle clutch packs with extra clutches, and you might want to call BTS or John Wood and look into getting a Valve Body
If they won't install better parts and still honor the warranty, run, as fast as you can.
You get what you pay for. A good trans rebuild should be $3K or higher if it's done right. There are a few hard parts that should absolutely be replaced, starting with the planetary gears.
Almost every 'cheap' e4od rebuilds that have been reported here didn't last long, warranty or not. You still loose your truck for the warranty work.
I just had mine done with billet tc and shift kit and warranty for around $2000.
Take the time and shop around some I had a range here locally from $1800-$3400(with no upgrades) over 3 months of research.
The guy I went to has a good reputation amongst some friends of mine too so it wasn't just the good deal but also the highest recommended. Always worth a few extra $ if you hear nothing but bad stuff about the shop with the best price.
I'm not near you or I would pass along his information.
x2 on the parts list. The 2100 is not a bad price, but you want something that will last and be able to hold up in case you add mods. You don't want to have the tranny puke on ya.
well i'm thinking now that it isn't the tranny, becuase after class today i started it up and was going to make sure the noise was coming from the transmission, not the transfer case since it would be wierd for an auto to grind. so i put it in reverse, no noise. it shifted perfect and backed up fine. same thing in drive but i only drove about 50ft. no time to do mre testing, but now i'm thinking maybe the transfer case linkage was out of adjustment or maybe my bookbag bunped the lever just enough to get it between gears. gonna drive it around town later tonight and do more testing.
well definately not the t-case. went to drive around the block, took off from a stop first seemed alright then shift into second and it was done. pushed it 100ft. back to where i started.
