I've got a '97 F150 with a headlamp burned out. I need to know how to pull either the headlight assembly out the front or remove the radiator shroud. I've tried removing the plastic screws but they are stripped. If I destroy the screws by forcibly pulling the shroud, the screws aren't available from Ford anymore, so once it's off, it's off, I guess. Will that hurt anything?
Well if youre headlamp buckets are the same as mine, you can pop the hood, and directly above the headlight buckets, youll see two black "levers" (One on each side)pull up on each one,and it unlocks the bucket from its mount.Replace the lamp, and shove the bucket back into place,Push down on the "levers" and this locks them back in place.
Sometimes they can be tough, but once the levers are in the uppermost position, you can gently pry out the buckets. try pulling up on the levers while pushing IN on the headlight bucket.
The only reason Im aware of this,is that I replaced the OEMs on my 97 with some ebay ones of a "clearer" variety.
I figure total "pull" from locked should be around 1/2 to 1 inch.
If they refuse to budge, try a large screwdriver under the lever against the radiator support.Pull GENTLY.. should pop up.
you gotta pull those release levers up to release the headlight, as described above. Even if you rip off the top rad cover, I don't think you can get the headlight out the back, unless you keep ripping stuff out......
Here's a tip for replacing those crappy plastic screws/rivets. Get some pliers, pull/cut them off and throw them away! I used some plastic drywall anchors, put those in the radiator support and then you can use some small screws and washers to screw down the radiator cover. If you really want to "pimp" it out, spray some black paint on the screws and washers before you install them and they blend right in.
