I think my CPS is going south but tell me if I am thinking correct. A few times in the last week or so the truck would die after going around a corner or into the driveway. Just like turning the key off. No spitting or sputtering. Yesterday it did it twice while driving straight down the road. Once at about 20 mph the other time at about 40. Every time the SES light came on. After turning the key off and then trying to restart sometimes it has fired right off and sometimes the SES is still on and I have needed to cycle the key one more time.
Sounds like it might be the cps. Does the tach move when it does not re-start? I guess you don't have a code reader? It's always a good idea to have a spare cps anyway.
I went to Toms (mndiesel) house after work and he ran his AE on my truck to get codes and what not. Wow. Tom is a great guy. He ran a bunch of tests and pulled quite a few codes. I will research to see what I find but if some one has any thoughts let me know. We had a couple that pointed toward the IDM. After clearing the codes he did the KOEO and then he did some KOER. I forget the actual test he was running-maybe a cylinder contribution test? You check each cylinder to see how well the CPS is working. All #'s were good except #8 which read anywhere from 3.5 up to 5.1 or so. I believe I have the black CPS but not 100% sure.
Here are the codes that came up right away. After clearing and doing all the testing, clearing and then retesting no codes came up except one relating to a back pressure issue. Cannot remember the number. We did not have time to drive the truck and retest though.
P1832
P1876
P0263
P0475
P0750
P0755
P1000
P1670
P1711
P1298
B1203 (not sure why this starts with a B)
What I don't see is anything related to the CPS. The 1298 and the 1670 are the ones I would focus on. I also don't see the P0284 which I would have guessed would have been tripped with those rotational velocity readings. Did you happen to note the rotational velocity readings on cylinder #1 (P0263)? With the exception of the 0475, I'd guess the rest of the codes were tripped during the KOEO & KOER tests. Some of those tests are designed for you to push or engage certain circuits to make sure they're working properly. I wouldn't have been surprised if you got BPP & Cruise codes as well since I've done that before with the AE.
I notice your signature lists IDM. How old is it and why did you change it? 1298 usually shows up with other codes like 1667, which you don't have listed, and an IDM failure would leave you walking, not cause the engine to sputter. Did you check all the wiring between the IDM and VC when you replaced it? What about between the IDM & PCM? If not, I'd say it's time to break out the ohm meter and start checking wiring. Don't forget to wiggle the harness while checking.
Chris those codes came up before I ran the tests right at the very beginning. We received the idm code after I cleared them upon connecting the AE program twice. It was on the KOEO and the KOER test. The velocity readings were all less than .5 except #3) .6 to 1.1 and #8 that was 3.5 to 5.1 like Jay said. What was weird is that as we were flipping thru each cylinder the 1st time the #3 had the readings above as we watched and then when we went back through to verify the readings stayed the same #3 was 0.0 and it stayed there.
Lets see how well I do here Chris. Rotational velocity on #1 was minimal maybe .2 or so. #3 came up once at about 1.3 but never again. Just .1 or even 0. All the codes I listed were stored before we even started. WE did get the BPP & Cruise codes during testing but did not come back after clearing things the second time.
The IDM was replaced only to do the infamous IDM Mod with the new resistor (diode?). Have not checked any wiring yet.
The truck did die twice on the way to Toms, started very difficult. Had to cycle the key quite a few times before it would fire. Ran great at his house and all the way home.
Not sure if this relates to the P1711, 1832, 1876 codes but I have had a few instances where when I back out of the driveway, put it in gear it stalls out unless you are on a slippery surface because the trans is stuck and starting out in third gear. If I shut the truck off and restart it drives normal.
Then that explains why you didn't get the BPP & cruise codes. I've scanned trucks before that had a whole list of codes that didn't mean anything. With the tranny & 4wd codes, it would be a good idea to clear and scan again after a test drive to be on the safe side, but I wouldn't worry too much about that for now.
Your comments on the rotational velocity make me think you've got a gray CPS in there. Might be something for you to check when you get a chance Jay. Not really important since there's not much you can do about it, and 3 & 8 contribution faults caused by a gray cps won't hurt anything. They're just annoying if you have a scanner and know they're there.
If your IDM is just the 140 mod, then I guess the next step would be to verify the connector on the IDM is snug and possibly check the box to make sure you sealed it up well and there's no moisture inside. Of course moisture depends on temps. I'm guessing y'all didn't quite hit 80 there today like we did.
Just missed that temp Chris! haha maybe 35 or so. Could still be humidity related I suppose if it did not seal well. I will check the box this weekend probably. I would like to tomorrow since it is supposed to be decent again but I will be gone all day for work. I will double check the CPS but I doubt I have a gray installed as I have never put one in and they were not out yet before I bought the truck to the best of my knowledge anyway.
I had time this afternoon to change out the CPS to a gray one just for giggles. We will see how that goes. I also double checked the seal on the IDM. It looked good. I did not open it to look for moisture. I put a little dielectric grease in the plug and put everything back together. We shall see. I did drive it a little bit and it has not stalled yet.
