If its at all possible to do without reprogramming the computer I'd like to remove all the smog crap on my FI 302, only question is what to do with all the hoses and lines running for that system.
The computer probably can't be reprogrammed to that degree. Leave all the hoses and lines and wires--many threads here about hopeless vacuum leaks etc due to slash and burn de-smog efforts.
You will gain nothing and probably end up with a poor running engine if you just try to take stuff off. Does it run correctly now?
I like to think of it this way...when it came off the dealer lot, with all that stuff connected, it ran PERFECT. So the problem isn't the smog stiff, it's basic engine stuff.
After driving a modded 83 351 for many years, I'd say that ii-ff, it can be legally done where you live, You could consider building a whole new power train that has none of the smog stuff, runs sweet, has loads more HP, is as(if not more) reliable, and puts out lots less harmful emissions than the old mill.
Money, Willingness to learn, and time come to mind as some of the required essentials.
To all the purest in the crowd, I apologize now.
But to simply remove, piece meal from the system that Ford built, would be fool hardy at best. Great, in-depth study of the system at hand would probably show, overlapping dependency between all sub systems involved. You might try running without catalytic converters though. I jest . Best wishes
yeah I already have the converters hacked and the AIR system still intact so im just gonna deal with it till I can find a 351 and get rid of the ECU totally and go old school
IF you decide to go to a non comp, non smog engine wait untill you have everything you need to do the change. I am dealing with an engine of unknown origin that was put in my truck two PO's ago and it is not fun tracing down all the hacks done to it. Not only did they put in a used engine but they also thought that putting in a one wire distributor would make it run right without addressing all the cut off and plugged with bolts hoses and exhaust leaks not to mention the seemingly miles of wiring that is now just hanging around under the hood. But then I digress. Wait and do it right and save yourself the hassles. My only wish is that they had left mine alone but hey for $300 what can you ask for.
thats kinda the boat im in. paid 1500 for the truck, and then stuff started breaking on a major scale, and its been a long and expensive road for me and its still not over yet.
