oil pan rust

hey guys i have read all the threads on oil pan rust and the use of por-15. i am just wondering how thick the oil pan metal is, i have some rust on it, and want to do something about it, but i dont want to start scrapeing any of the rust off for the fear of punching through the pan. so if you could tell me around how thick the pan is, this will give me an idea of what i can and how long i have to do with it.

I am thinking if pan is so thin that rust is all that is left, it is time for a new pan.. There is no strength in rust. Just as well remove it and repaint or it will continue to corode deeper into the good metal.

I had the same worries when I tapped on it. I took a scraper and went across it to non-flaked metal. I was surprised at how thick it seemed after I removed the flaking.
I then used an electric sander to smooth it out a bit and made sure to leave rust on, as the POR-15 instructions say to do. I was amazed at how easy the whole job was.

All I can say about thickness is that it was a lot thicker than I thought.

yeah i know, i havent got under there yet to check out how bad the rust is, it might just be a little surface rust, i just want to know how thick the pan is, 1/8" maybe, 1/16"?? then once i get under there and try a little scraping i can decide on how bad it is
