Ok, I actually own an 1994 f150 5.0 and just recently acquired a 1999 Mercury Mountaineer(Same as explorer I figure). It has the 5.0 with 160,000 mi. I got the SUV for 100 bucks with a bad tranny. It looks in such great shape that Im goin to get the tranny fixed. Should I rebuild the engine also? Or just maybe do a top end. REbuild the head, and a timing chain? I scrap cars on the side and ran into this one. We have been savin to get the wife a new vehicle and she really likes this one. I figure I use the money in saving toward the SUV. Can I get some advice?
If the SUV is what she REALLY wants,Id say throw the extra funds at it,and do a complete overhaul.Problem with a "top overhaul" is that when its completed, the compressions will be back up to OEM specs, and the rings however will be worn.
Ive seen people to the top end thing, just to have to replace rings/bearings a few thousand miles later.
The other option of course,is to get the tranny fixed, and do a complete tune-up,plugs,wires,belts,hoses,Oil change,Thermostat, and Coolant replacement etc.....and then drive......
Yeah, I will probably get tranny fixed and do a complete tune up. Do you know what model tranny is in a 99 awd mountaineer (3speed automatic)? Thanks for the help.
