Hey guys, I need help real quick. I replaced my starter winter before last. Should work, right? WRONG!! I just went out to start my truck and all I heard was the dreaded "electric motor only" noise. I called the store where I bought the starter from and asked if they had one in stock (I got the one with the lifetime warranty, so I would need to remove it and get down there within the next hour and a half ). They have one in stock. I got dressed in warm clothes to crawl under it in the snow (about 3 inches and about 15 degrees, and colder with the wind chill) I figured Id try one more time to get it to start. I ran the starter (electric motor only noise) for about 4 seconds and then I heard the "teeth on the flywheel" noise. I stopped and started the truck 10 times successfully in a row. Question: do I trust the starter thats in there, or do I go ahead and replace it before it leaves me stranded???? (keep in mind its cold, windy, snow on the ground, 20 mins to 9 at night, etc...)
Thanks, Aaron
If it's doing that, it's going to strand you in far worse weather and away from home.
Got another vehicle you can use to get the starter?
Show up when they open tomorrow, if not tonight. Maybe you can install it tomorrow?
Thanks for the fast responses. I agree. I am going to replace it tomorrow morning. Like you said, batter now and in the driveway then somewhere else in a far worse situation. Aaron
The starter shouldn't run in a disengaged position. The grinding noise from gear clash could be a weak solenoid pull-in force, or it could be that you have a damaged ring gear on the engine.
