programmers

i have a 2004 f-350 king ranch 4x4 with a 6.0 liter powerstroke. i am wanting to purchace a programmer to try to up my fuel mileage. most of my driving is empty, but sometimes pulling a two horse trailer or gooseneck utility trailer. either case, nothing real heavy. any suggestions? brands? i dont want to spend 3 or 4 hundred without results!

Welcome to FTE......get SCT tuner and download some Spartan files. they free and you enjoy it. but first do gauges boost exhaust probe and trans temp to monitor whats up with the truck, than put a 4" exhaust system of your choice you can just do CAT delete. that alone will give you MPG gain....this will uncork your truck..
and make sure all the oil and fuel filters including your air filters are up to par...

You forgot to suggest, an EGR blocker plate to keep your EGR cooler from overheating.
Very important to protect your engine from sucking in Anti-freeze.
I am running Aggressive Street Economy as a daily driver, I suggest not to TOW with it.

I have a superchip Cortex and love it and it comes with a 2 year powertrain warranty I agree with Pete about the exaust and gauges and good maintenance they are a must if you are going to unleash the fury of your 6.0L PSD

With a SCT tuner it will limit the egr valve it will not shut it down completly but it will cut it down substantially

Yes this is correct it cuts down the cycle duty, I blocked my EGR Cooler on the intake at the Turbo up-pipe (leave the EGR valve plugged in). I did not want to take any chances of bursting my EGR cooler from the extremely hot exhaust Temps. from the programmer. If the EGR valve is not opening the extremely hot exhaust will still enter the EGR cooler and cause hot flashing (causing the solder to melt and fail). Block or full delite is my #1 suggestion, Gauge(s), full Turbo back 4" exhaust and then let's talk about a programmer.

What happens if you tow with an aggressive street tune?

By towing, I mean short trips around town towing a utility trailer or such?

Is the only concern when towing with a high power tune the EGT's?

I also might add that a tuner is not a mileage adder. Some people get slight increases but that has been the exception to the rule. programmers are for power.

Like 69cj said never install a programmer with a mpg gain being the reason. You will only end up with dissapointment. When you don't see any gain. If there is any it will be very slight. A programmer is made to produce more power. If you see any gain then just consider that a plus. If you do get one stick with one that offers custome tunes (sct or Spartan) as this will give you the best chance of seeing a mpg gain. Plus they are much much better for your truck.
