I'm also wanting to install higher ratio rockers in my Windsor (393 stroker). I've looked at the Crane Cams 1.7 roller rockers that are popular with the Stangs, but I honestly don't know how well they'd hold up over time compared with other brands. Ford Motorsports also carries 1.7 roller rockers for 302s and 351s. Post what you go with, I'd like to know.
i'm not a big fan of proform's products everything i have gotten from them just seems cheap they might be alright if you don't have too agressive ramps on your cam and if your not running high spring pressure
conanski......i can run roller rockers tho right, even tho my motor is not a roller motor? also im guessing proforms are not that great?
You can run roller rockers without it being a roller cam. As far as Proforms you get what you pay for...mine lasted about 8 months. If you're on a budget Crane and Comp have some very fair priced sets. Or you can go to any mustang sight and find guys selling sets for half of what you'll pay new.
My opinion would be to go with CompCam brand.
They have never let me down, and I haven't had one bad experience with them. However I have had a bad experience with crane, and personally I think there cams are ****.
And while your at it, you may want to think about putting new valve springs in too. You will definitely see performance from doing just the rockers or both the rockers and springs.
Has anyone EVer put the larger ratio rockers on a stock motor and dyno'ed them both ways to see if they are worth the swap or not. I sure seams to me there should be a better cam profile/duration before you start adding lift. To much valve overlap is a performance killer.
You haven't got to worry about valve overlap with the stock cams, the lobe seperation angle is at least 114deg and total valve lift is is well below 0.400" on all the pre '94 5.0 motors and just over 0.400" on th 5.8, so every little bit helps. A cam upgrade will produce much more dramitic increases in power but it's a lot more work. I have some seat time is a mustang that got 1.7 rockers among other upgrades, and they definitely make a noticable difference on that motor, I suspect the difference would be more dramatic on the truck motors because the stock cam is more restrictive to begin with. Can't say I have ever seen dyno results for rockers alone though.
