Does anyone have a ballpark weight of an 85ish 32' Jayco 5th wheel? I am just curious. I had to manufacture a way to bolt in a hitch in the bed today, and drug this trailer for a friend. This is the first real load i have put behind it, and other than burning a little of the clutch trying to drag 4 flats sunk a foot deep, it pulled great, with no problems while on the county road. i was pretty pleased by the way it acted for me.
if i remember correctly, the total weight on a 36' cougar is almost 20,000 lbs. this is probably a little more than a 32' jayco but that ought to get in the range for you. only reason i have any clue is i went to the rv place and checked to see if my 250 would pull a 36' triple axle fifth wheel and they said yeah, but better to have a 350.
the guys at the rv place told me something about no more than 10 percent of the gvw on the hitch. i think they were just letting me know that if you get a fifth wheel hitch, make dang sure it's rated for enough to pull what you hook to. i've never pulled fifth wheel rigs, just goose-neck rigs. don't feel like it's as many things to have to worry about failing if you've got a 5/8's inch plate welded from frame to frame and a 2 5/8" ball hooked up. but that's just me.....
i've got s 3/4 x 12" plate across the frame and 4 3" grade 8 7/16 bolts holding it down through the bed and plate. with the plate being 2 pass 6011 and 1 HOT pass 7018 holding it down.
broke a 5/8 gooseneck plate once. had 28 green, wet, round bermuda bales on a 40' gooseneck. Just a tad too much weight. Just glad I didn't break anything else, and I just pulled off the highway into the guy's place when it did it.
