When I had the 5.0 in my `90 truck I had it at 12 deg. most of the time. With the new 393 I have it up to 17 but I`m putting octane booster in w/premium Shell gas and it seems to run crisper.I just kept advancing it until I found the sweet spot

first octane boosters is a scam, better off buying premium. Now your old school camshaft bleeds off more compression than a stock one. It results a lower dynamic compression ratio and thats whats important for fuel requirements, not the static compression. Having your timing all in by 2800 may need some more octane.

I also would increase the timing, do you use any vac advance?

yeah i tried 12* initial today and it ran great but i need to adjust something because it detonates when i take my foot off the throttle or make the transition from three quarter throttle to half throttle i think maybe my carb is out of adjustment just by a littlebit

and the more timing i give it the worse it gets

I take it you are running some lighter springs in your dizzy. You may be stuck with 8 degrees since you have it coming in so fast. heavy vehicles don't like the timing so as a lighter car would.

yeah i'm realizing that with the converter (3500 stall) i have in the truck it isn't a problem at all and has really good power and everything till i get in 3rd with the converter locked up and the secondaries open, when i let off the throttle the secondaries close and i can feel detonation so i'm thinking about putting some heavier springs in it and running all in at 3000 or 3200
