Cold weather question
I have a 98 f150 4.6 4x4 with 150k mi. that i bought this past summer. This winter i noticed that, until the transmission "warms up", the engine runs about 3-400 rpm's over normal and won't shift until it reaches over 2k rpm. Is this normal in cold weather or does the transmission need maintenance? Also, i changed the fuel filter recently that looked like it the original, so i doubt that the transmission fluid has been flushed at all.
Thanks in advance!
..Cant answer the high idle question, but concerning the tranny,I would say its time(actually WAY past) for at least a partial fluid/filter change. There (in my opinion) have always been questions concerning a complete transmission drain, and fluid replacement on high mileage transmissions...If it were me,Id drop the transmission pan, replace the filter, and just replace the fluid that is lost when you drop the pan.It should be around 7 quarts or so.
Some have used the transmission pump itself, and disconnected one of the cooling lines to pump out all the fluid(including torque converter). While this is probably fine for lower mileage transmissions,I would have some heartburn about doing it on a unit with 150K on it.
I suspect the new filter, and partial fluid replacement should get your shift patterns back to normal. If not,its likely time to have some diagnostic work done, and most likely a rebuild...Again...welcome to the forum.
