Relay Identification..

1988 F150 5.0 EFI automatic 4x4

I've been tracking down a power failure in my truck, and I have a couple of questions that I hope someone can answer...

I was in the FordFuelInjection.com site and reading up on the EFI electrical systems for Ford trucks, They show an "Ignition Relay" along side the EEC relay and the Fuelpump relay in their schematic,..I dont see it under my hood. would that relay pertain to my year f150? I dont see it in the Haynes book either..

And...
I noticed that I do have a Relay back in the corner close to the firewall by the Brake booster, and its attached to the upper fender behind the Hood hinge, -its up high and has Lt.grey tape wrapped around the wires, and it is a Relay, But whats it For? anyone know??
-Thanks

I'm looking at Autozone.com's component locations:
On your 1988 Ford Truck F150 1/2 ton P/U 4WD 5.0L FI , the Relay - Trailer Lights is located:

Under hood, driver side, rear engine area, mounted on firewall

On your 1988 Ford Truck F150 1/2 ton P/U 4WD 5.0L FI , the Relay - Fuel Pump is located:

Under hood, center, upper engine area, mounted on air cleaner support bracket

On your 1988 Ford Truck F150 1/2 ton P/U 4WD 5.0L FI , the Relay - Check Engine Light is located:

Front seating area, center, under dash, passenger side of center dash brace, mounted on top of Electronic Control Assembly (ECA)
Autozone doesn't appear to list an EEC Relay, or an Ignition Relay, in the parts for sale for your truck, but they do show an ECM wiring relay (could this be the check engine light relay/eca relay?). Maybe their site will help you make some sense of it.

Well, The 1988's fuelpump relay, and EEC-(Electric Engine Control) Relay are about 4 inches apart from one another, and mine are clipped in a small plastic box-like holder marked with raised letters saying EEC RELAY- screwed to a bracket plate next to the airbox.

-I think your right about that Relay back in the corner being a Trailer light Relay..
I have the Lariat XLT and did find a trailer harness running underneath..
I was kinda hoping it was an "Ignition relay" of sorts...only because I'm looking for an origin of my electric problem..
-Thanks Beastly

This sounds like what is on my '97 F250 drivers-side fenderwell, too. So, I upped the model year, and looked for an '89 F150 4x4 5.0, and here is the ignition relay location according to Autozone's Repair Info -> Component Locations information:
On your 1989 Ford Truck F150 1/2 ton P/U 4WD 5.0L FI , the Relay - Ignition is located:

Under hood, driver side, front side of wheelwell, mounted in relay block

Application:
MCU
This sounds a little better from your description, doesn't it?

I still don't see it listed in Autozone's parts for sale (unless they are just calling it a multi-purpose relay), but, I do find the EEC Relay, and several others on the partsamerica.com website under Relays -> Misc Relays.

EDIT: Rock Auto shows a bunch of relays, too. And they at least give some Ford part/reference numbers, even though they are listed as Misc relays.

Maybe you are in a situation like I am with my 2002 ZX2. Depending on what part I need, I need to order for a 2002, or a 2003. Ford apparently switched quite a bit of the components to the 2003 version during the 2002 production run. When I need parts, I have to look up both years, and end up ordering both if they are different, and when I'm done, I have to return the one that didn't fit.

I hope this is helpful, and not muddying the waters more.

that last description said in front of the wheelwell. The relay I am looking at is behind the wheelwell, right in front of the firewall. It is actually behind the hood hinge on drivers side. I am thinking it probably is a trailer harness relay, I traced one of the wires inside the cab and best I can tell it runs to my trailer brake controller.

Yep,- I lookedinside the cab down on the loor against the firewall and found the connector with the same greytape wrap as the relay against the firewall, your right- it runs a trailer brake controller.

I think Ive heard this particular Relay called a few names..or referenced as such- Computer relay, EEC relay , -Autozone identifies it as a "Multiple Purpose" relay..which I don't think is right..as things like this are usually a Ford product that you would probably be better off getting it at the dealer parts dept.....and for mabey $40 ea.? -I hope mine dont blow-Lol.

But I was just trying to find out what I had allready found out- It was a "Trailer Brake Control relay"..I thought it might have been somthing else that concerned the Ignition system..
I guess I'm still learning new things about this old truck after 3 years of ownin it..
-Thanks.

Look on the relay for the Ford ID number, it's either stamped in black ink, or molded into the part.

Post the ID number here, I'll give you the Ford part number, tell you exactly what it is, what it fits, and the cost.

If there is a Motorcraft part number as well as the Ford part number, any autoparts store can cross it over to the brands they sell.

OK,...I thought I'd take you up on your offer,- Heres a couple of #'s :

E3AF
12A646
B28
Brown Casing
Black top

E3TB
9345
A2A
Green casing
Black top

***There is one at the rear of the Firewall in close proximity of the Hood Hinge that Has absolutely NO markings on it whatsoever.- The plug end is light Gray in color w/ a black top, -three wire relay..-Again, I believe this to be the Trailer brake control relay..only because I tracked down the wiring..(However, -Ive been wrong b4).
So, do you have any info on a trailer brake control relay?, or maybe a number for an actual "Ignition relay"?? I am curious to know if an "Ignition relay" does exist?
-Thanks

I'm only going to decode these two ID numbers at this time. I've been on here since 6AM, and I'm using scratchy microfiche slides, hard to read for an old goat.

Will be back on later tonight to run down that trailer tow (?) relay.

ID number: E3TB-9345-A2A / Ford part number: E3TZ9345A replaced by F19Z9345A replaced by F8PZ14N135AA .. Fuel Pump Relay (Motorcraft DY864).

MSRP: $21.53 // FTEpartsguy.com price: $11.63.
-----------------------------------------------
ID number: E3AF-12A646-B2B / Ford part number: E3AZ12A646A replaced by F8PZ14N135BA .. EEC Relay Assy. (Motorcraft DY865)

MSRP: $29.36 // FTEpartsguy.com price: $15.85.

As one can see, Ford just loves to update part numbers. Tryin' to keep track of all this jazz, is a ROYAL PITA!

I have been reading your questions here and it seems I have the same problem other than if I let it sit for 1/2 hour or so it will start. I have changed both the EEC relay and fuel pump relay, replaced all distributer parts with no fix. I like you started to trace wires beginning on paper from my Haynes book. I've narrowed it down to what they call the PCM Power control Module, or the starter relay. Did you ever find your problem? If you did could you help me out. It would be very much appriciated
