I've got a 78 f150 step side 4x4 and am running 37 x 12.50 mtr's, the axles are stock aas far as I can tell (dana 44 hp reverse cut up front and the 9 inch in the rear) what are the largest tires I should run with these axles? I know guys that run 40's with dana 44's with no problem and I also know guys that run 35's and destroy their 44's. I'll only be doing light off roading with it hitting some deeper mud every now and then but I probably won't be hitting any rock trails. I'd like to at least throw a locker in the rear. I want to put on some 38 x 13.50's probably thornbirds ( I love the way they look on these trucks) but am worried the axles won't hold up if I start hiting the mudholes.
I think it all depends on your axle . I also know guys that run 40's with the 44 with no problem I have always been told tho that 37's and bigger the 44 starts to stress just depends on the axle i guess
well, it just depends on how hard you are on your axles. 40s with a 9 inch isn't gonna last to long. some people just have straight luck and can run the biggest tire available and nothing happens. then when you try it, it may break on the way outta your driveway.
I, personally, wouldn't put anything bigger than 37s on that 9 inch. also that's probably pushing it there.
as for the Thornbirds......those tires suck. no offense, but everyone that you hear from says the same thing about them.
Yeah, I know it's FLARESIDE, sorry to all those offended by the mistake! I know the thornbirds aren't as good as the boggers or tsl's but I used to run them on my 87 wrangler w/ a 350 & 1 ton ford axles and they did pretty well but then the jeep was a lighter rig than my truck. Thanks for the info guys, I knew 38's would be pushing it just wanted to see what you guys were running.
37-38 max with open diffs, locked the 9" in my truck and twisted an axle tube. Running 38.5 Boggers. Split the axle tube from the shock mount to the hog head.
