7.3 Guy needs 6.0 help

My neighbor has a bone stock 2005. He had issues and the dealer replaced the EGR valve. Issues re-appeared quickly.

Truck smokes and 'loads up' at red lights, then 'races' on take off.

Dealer says he needs another EGR OR a 'pick-up module'.

What might a pick-up module be? Neighbor IS NOT engine oriented.

Says it gets worse as day progresses.

Any ideas? Should I go unplug his EGR?

Thanks in advance for any help.
Joe

Very very strange. You can try unpluging the EGR valve, but I don't know how it would be related though. What were the symptoms when he took it in the first time, and did it fix it? No idea what the pick-up module would be, never heard of it since I've been around here. Is the truck throwing a code? It sounds like a sensor or something of that sort to me. Also do you trust the dealer he's taking it to?

Sorry for all the questions but the more info the better. Hopefully the guru's have some more ideas.

No! I don't trust that dealershio, nor hardly any others. He just see's me with my hood up so he asks. He does'nt want to throw money at changing parts.

The before symptoms were the same. It did fix it, but only short term. The loading up is also kind of a miss. Gets worse with the longer he drives???

I certainly have no clue.

The 'pick-up module' really throws me, but this is coming from a totally non mechanic trying his best to remember what was said to him.

The plot thickens...

I still am not sold on the EGR valve. If you have seen one you would see that there's not much to fail. They usually fail due to build up which wouldn't be the case for the second one. Even so it doesn't really do anything until higher temps certainly not at idle. Maybe something controlling it is malfunctioning. Certainly try unplugging it and see what happens, do not leave it unplugged as a fix however.

There has to be a trusty dealership with a good 6.0 tech in as big of a city as Houston. Might try doing a search for one and send him that way. His warranty is good for 5 years/100k miles and there is NO deductible on emissions equipment. So make sure if he is still under warranty he isn't getting boned for the $100.

Good luck and thanks for looking out for your Ford brethren.

Another idea... have him ask if they reflashed the truck. Maybe a error in the reflash could have messed something up, or he could have them reflash it and see if that does anything for him. Make sure he gets his batteries/alternator load tested before the new flash it has been causing issues issues with weak batteries.

Again I'm just pissing into the wind here just trying to throw you some possibilities. Never heard of those symptoms before.

I appreciate the help. He is out of 100K warranty. He don't mind paying, just wants good results. I was/am hoping for a dealerless fix, if appropriate. If not, so be it.
