Clacking noises.

I'll start with the truck details
2001 F-350
7.3
155,000 miles

when the truck warms up, it has a clack or a knock, almost like a rocker arm knock.

It only seems to be when the truck gets up tp operating temp, and I get off the highway, sitting at a light at idle. I thought about the "Hutch Mod", but it only seems to be at operating temp, and sometimes when I have a full tank, so it seems to be ruled out to me.

My other questions: what does the HPOP feed? What is it's function? Could this be related? How do I check to see if the HPOP is working properly if I need to check it?

HPOP = High Pressure Oil Pump. high pressure oil runs your fuel injectors.

You might try putting some fuel additive in for lubricity. Might quiet ya' down a bit.

Can you identify which cylinder is noisy, or does it seem to be more than one?

What are you running for oil? Is it clean, full and the right type? I just change from dino to syn and the difference in the sound is unreal.

I just bought the truck recently, and It had a fresh oil change when I bought it. It's still clean and full. Now that I'm getting close to time to change the oil, (which I have checked religiously, to see if I had any leaks on a new to me truck) I am going to run full syn. 5w-40 is what I have read is a good all around oil in a temperate climate like Seattle.

any suggestions on weight or am I in the right direction?

I can't really decide where the noise is coming from, I want to say driver's side, but can't narrow down to one cylinder.

5w-40 syn is correct. The noise may be coming from the #8 injector

why number 8?

Is it the last one in line for oil?

Yes that one due to design is "starved" (for lack of a better term) for oil. I run Howes in my fuel tank and after a couple of tanks it seems to be helping out.

# 8 fires right behind #6 so it gets a shortage of fuel and which lubricates it thus the clatter
I run a mixture of DK and two stroke oil ad it's a lot quieter

I'm already running RBP additive, but I'll try a little 2-stroke in it too and see what happens.

Thanks for the food for thought.

Mine had exact same symptoms as you. Knock when warm. One morning on my way to work it started out of the blue. Never had it before. I made up a home made injector break out box and found it to be #8. I also did the In tank mod "hutch" I didn't get better. The injector is out now on the bench along with the glow plugs. Going to try a different injector. How much 2stroke oil are you guys dumping in? Additive didn't do anything for me. But forgot about the oil thing.
