Thought we could collect causes and remedies for various kinds of clunking that can happen under the Ex.
___________
Suspension clunking:
I can't seem to pin down what's causing the clunking under my truck. I have checked all shock and suspension bolts for proper tightness, replaced the front end sway bar end links, removed and greased the front sway bar bushings (the u-shaped split bushings), and checked to make sure the exhaust isn't banging against anything.
Driveshaft Clunk while going from rear or neutral to drive.
Remedy....
Mark the slip joint and driveshaft, remove driveshaft, and grease the slipjoint with a moderate amount of grease, reinstall in same fashion and to make sure you realign the marks you made prior to removal.
After reading that thread, I'm not sure I have the same problem. Mine is a deep thunk, not a squeaking rattle. Until I got under it and started looking around, I would have sworn that the exhaust was thunking against the fuel tank (it's not).
Well my vote would have been for a ball joint, as I just got rid of my clunk by replacing a bad one. Have you lifted it up via the frame and tried tugging on all the suspension parts?

I guess that's the next step. Don't know how I'm going to do that, though. My floor jack doesn't go high enough. Tips?
Hmmm, if you happen to live in a small enough town.... a garage might put it up on a lift for you. I have done that a few times to change the oil or some such thing.
It would really take at least a couple of floor or bottle jacks to lift one end and set it on stands. You could set the jack(s) on some type of blocks that will not shift. Just rinse and repeat for the other end.

Sign me up for the thunk. Frustrated parts changing to find it,, sway bar end links balljoints bearings sway bar bushings shocks, NEW drive shafts and u joints. About to give up and call it the ghost of the EX.
double check swaybar mounts (split bushings)even a little wear can cause clunk grease wont fix clunk mine looked perfect but had slight play
replaced- clunk gone
Check the swaybar links that attach to the axle. I felt a very solid bang in the floor at every bump. 5 minutes to change and not very $$. They are the ones that go around the swaybar and are held to the axle by the "C" type brackets.

Turned out that my clunking was an improperly torqued REAR sway bar, even though the clunking was referred to what sounded like the front of the vehicle.
So I guess the tip is to check torque on both sway bars (if so equipped) no matter which end of the truck the clunking is coming from.
