chimps gone wild
A woman has been hospitalized with life-threatening injuries after a pet chimpanzee attacked her at a friend's home in Stamford, Connecticut, police said.<!--startclickprintexclude-->
Charla Nash, 55, had just arrived at her friend Sandra Herold's house when the chimp, named Travis, jumped on her and began biting and mauling her, causing serious injuries to her face, neck and hands, according to Stamford Police Capt. Rich Conklin, who said the attack was unprovoked
The police captain also said this isn't the first interaction his officers have had with Travis; the chimp escaped in 2003 and "wreaked havoc" on the streets of Stamford for a couple of hours.
She then called 911 before stabbing the chimp with butcher knife and hitting him with a shovel. Neither fazed Travis, who police said was like a child to Herold.
In 2005, a different chimp escaped from California's Animal Haven Ranch and chewed off a man's nose and genitals
must be fun having a chimp chew off your nuts.

lol, both of those are funny as hell
Perhaps the chimp committed suicide by cop?

Yeah, I've seen Travis riding around in a flatbed.
"Travis, known for liking police officers, tried to open the passenger door of a cruiser, smashing the side-view mirror. When he couldn't get it open, the chimp went around to the driver's-side door and opened it, Conklin said. The officer in the cruiser shot the animal.
"He had no choice but to pull his pistol and fire several rounds," Conklin said.
He said the chimp was shot in the upper torso, then fled. Officers followed a trail of blood into the house to Travis' living quarters, a room filled with ropes and a "zoo-like cage," Conklin said. The chimp was dead there, he said."

HMMMMM...I fail to see the humor in a woman being mutilated by a chimpanzee. Her injuries are life threatening...certainly nothing to laugh at.

Close to 8 hours in surgery. It seems she's out of the woods but still in ICU, will have quite a time recovering, and never appear the same.
I've been told by a first responder that it was a surreal scene, like right out of Island of Dr. Moreau.
Certainly it was a horrific attack, and the only one to blame is Mrs Herold who was already in violation of reg's that are on the books.
But noooo,
Reactionary and publicity hound, state AG Dick Blumenthal is now looking at banning all "exotic" animals.
Is someone's Parakeet, Bearded Dragon, Degu or Angelfish likely to do something like this???
Travis should have been classified as a circus animal, along with tigers, bears and elephants.
As for PETA, well I can't truly express what I think of that farce on this forum.
If someone gets gored by a bull or kicked in the head by a horse is it the owner's fault?
The animal's?
But these are "domesticated" animals, right???
The public's perception of reasonable and acceptable risk is what's in question.
Personally I'm comfortable around farm animals (no Tim jokes) but would not be if I encountered a 200 Lb. simian face to face regardless of the situation.

WTF was this woman thinking calling "her friend" to come over and try and get him back inside?
There's NO way any ape can be considered domesticated.
Farm animals and common pets have been bred for many generations by humans, for humans.
I feel the same way about someone who keeps something like a raccoon as a pet, They are just asking for trouble.
Chimps and Bonobo's are also the only other animals, aside from humans, that have been proven to plan and commit murder.
Hmmmm...
And most of the large domesticated animals (dogs aside) are all animals that would rather "fly rahter than fight", so keeping chimps (which are violent animals in the wild) doesn't seem like the best plan...
That's why i'm sticking with horses, dogs and maybe a min-donkey/goat once we get enough property (altough having a camel would be cool...)
