gwcon, my neighbors brother has a friend whose sister dated a Ford tech and he claims Ford has a weight sensor on the rear view mirror and the truck wont start if it senses anything heavier than a parking pass. Someone tried to remove the dice before going in for service but the PCM stores a permanent code and the truck automatically sends an e-mail to Bill Ford with your VIN. Fuzzy dice are cool but I just wouldnt risk it.
My Son the Ford diesel tech tells me that Ford is sending out an inspector on most warranty claims over a couple of hundred dollars. In the past they just told the dealers to do the job but now they want to inspect the defect for themselves. Seems that it no longer matters if the dealer lets you get away with a mod. Ford won't. Mine will stay stock for the life of the warranty.
My 4.5" suspension w/ 35" tires is the most mods i will do to my truck. Dealer Ok'd it w/ no problems if I run into problems w/ ball joints, component ends wearing, etc... for warranty.
My dealer diesel service adviser admittedly told me not to touch the motor/emission components.
Yeah that was my truck you are talking about. Sounds like the dealer told you more about my truck than they told me. The truck quit going down the freeway and shut itself down. When I coasted to a stop and got out there was oil all down my truck. They pointed at the dpf being removed to get my warranty rejected. I called SCT about what the tech said and they laughed. Then when I talked to the Service writer and called b.s. to the cat plugging up he said a piston had a hole in it. When I went to see the truck myself I didnt see any hole in the piston. So I dont believe they ever really did find out the real reason it failed. Just bs their way to get your warranty rejected for mods. The repo lady told me ford is rejecting warranty on all modded trucks. I am sure someone will contintue to blame the tuner etc, but I have found the same thing that happend to my truck happen on stock trucks on these sites. I called a lawyer and it takes more money than it does to buy the truck to sue ford so thats pretty much the end of story......

Ford told you up front not to mod the truck. If you run a tuner and remove the DPF you are playing Russian Roulette with your warranty.
How can you talk about sueing Ford when you violated the terms of the warranty by modding the engine and emissions system. Sorry to hear that your engine blew, but who's really to blame.

Because there are laws that state a warranty cannot be denied do to just mods. But unfortunately I have to prove to ford that it was not due to the mods. SCT has thousands of tuners on these trucks and would probably not be in business if their tuners were causing the problems....and if it were the case those people would be here talking about it.
Doesnt matter anymore truck is gone and so is a long time ford customer. From what I have read when its stock they even try to make up excuses like water in the fuel, lack of maint etc to deny warranties. Do a search for "Ford 6.4 blown up" on google and you can see for youself.....

by the way they also use aftermarket oil filters as an excuse to deny too, guess that constitues as a mod....
The law states that the modification had to cause the failure. In other words they couldnt deny warranty on your power window motor because you ran a tuner. Unfortunately the burden is on you to prove the tuner didnt cause the engine failure and that would be hard to do. I understand that the tuner may not have actually caused it but you have to be able to prove it.
I know you are frustrated at Ford about this but I know for fact GM and Dodge are doing the same thing. I have a friend that is a diesel tech for a Chevy dealer and the first thing they do is look for mods. Not just for them to deny warranty but because they get surprise visits from GM reps and they randomly walk through service looking for such items and then inspect the ticket. The dealer themselves would rather do the work. Heck they hope you do blow it up because it means more work for them... so long as big brother in Detroit pays the bill. If a Ford/GM/Dodge rep finds a dealer performing warranty repairs on a modded truck that dealer can kiss their franchise license good bye. They are all decreasing the number of dealers they have so what better way to decide which ones go first. Its the nature of the business.
You mentioned a "repo". Im not sure if this is the route you went but if so I hope you realize this deal isnt over yet. IF this is the case, your truck is sold "as is" at auction. If you owed $40k and it sold for $20k at the auction then you are still legally obligated to the other $20k remaining balance. They will garnish wages, put liens on anything you own, etc. Its nasty. I was in the business for over 10 years, Im not making this up.
As the topic of the thread states this is a bad bad deal. I honestly feel for you and hate to hear about anyone in this situation. Its too bad you arent 100% sure what happened to the truck. Did they ever offer a price to fix the truck? Any mod has the potential to be a gamble and unfortunately there isnt enough emphasis on warranty education. Im sure you had to sign an off road waiver to get the DPF delete tunes but I bet no one asked you to sign a warranty waiver. Funny how it works but the bottom line is the burden of responsibility rest on the customer. I know there are lots of people out there with mods that dont realize their impact on warranty.
Your statement about these engines failing all over the place is incorrect. The 6.4 has proved itself as quite a reliable engine to date. Check out the overall problems list and the high mileage members of this site.
There are also many people on this site who also have tuners on their 6.4's and have had no problems. STD comes to mind.
So my guess is something was not OK with your setup, maintenance or whatever.
