Pushrod Q?

Hey everyone I haven't posted since I pulled the transmission and flywheel assembly to replace a leaky freeze plug on my '87 f150...that went well, but now I just put the cylinder head back on after a head gasket change.

I wonder if I need to do something special to the push rods or do i just put them back in place and tighten down the rocker arms?

I only changed the head gasket and didn't replace any valves or anything just took the rods out by loosening up the rocker arms, do they need adjustment?

Tighten each rocker arm bolt to 17-23 Ft. Lbs. No need to worry about the position of valves or camshaft.

well make sure the head gasket you have is the same thickness as the one you pulled out if it's thinner then your valves will stick open and if it's thicker you will have tapping valves

i am assuming non adjustable rocker arms, never built a 6 cylinder anything

Thanks for all the help !!

Only other thing is two of the rods are sticking out higher than the rest around 5/16" higher...its the first and the 4th. and when I torque them down the valve springs compress accordingly.

So I guess thats the self adjusting part... didnt notice that when I took 'em out.

now onto the exhaust manifold!

This just means those cam lobes are up. I would spin the motor a couple of times, re-torqueing the rocker arms between spins. If the cam lobes are up, could cause more pressure on that rocker arm and not let you tighten enough.
