Could be a ok deal if it checks out. A little on the high side without the carbs and other stuff he wants to keep off it. But I'm sure there's a little wiggle room in the price? Figure close to $5k in parts alone as it sits. Rest would depend on build quality really.
Isn't a 427 really a 428?? I honestly don't know anything about these motors other than they are used for racing. Enlighten this youngin with your guys knowledge. I assume the oil galleys are fed to left side of the engine since all the oil is on the right side for turning left at circle tracks or am i wrong?? What makes this engine so sought after?? I have learned there is always someone out who knows more i do. Why i sit back and just learn, this site is alot bigger than i thought maybe there is a thread that would explain this in detail??

No, a 427 is actually a 425. A 428 is actually a 427. A 427 has a 4.23" bore and a 3.78" stroke while a 428 has a 4.13" bore and a 3.98" stroke. So a 427 with a 428 crank is a stroked motor of 447 cid motor and you loose the steel crank. The side oiling system was to feed the main bearings first instead of the standard FE way of feeding the cam bearings and then the mains. Had nothing to do with the direction of turns.

427: Ford won LeMans and other high profile sports car races--24 hours at Daytona, others. Also the "427" in the legendary "427 Cobra". Winning LeMans and what Ford did to win is a legend in and of itself. It is the stuff of heros and heroic efforts. The 427 was everywhere else too, in drag racing, NASCAR, marine etc. And then there is the SOHC version, yet another story.
428: The Cobra Jet in the Mustangs led to many Ford victories in drag racing, which was big and getting bigger by the second when these engines were campaigned by factory and privateer alike. The 428 was cheaper to manufacture than the 427, and was originally just an upgrade for bigger and heavier cars like the T-bird and the minor luxo-barge Galaxie 7 Litre. Add some 427 parts and it comes alive and makes power like the 427, but without those costly but longevity-giving cross-bolted mains.
Thus they remain sought after and will remain so. A 428 raises interest, a 427 creates a stir.
You seem to forget that the 428CJ was in the same horsepower and torque range as the single 4 barrel 427. Dissregard the 335 hp @ 5200 claimed by the factory. Because the stock 428CJ with C-6 shifted at WOT at 6000 in drive.

Where did I forget that?

I thought that covered it.
Better not go back to the Hotrod books !! A 428 will never be as reliable at the same HP and Tq level as the 427 !! Just Aint gonna happen ! I guess thats why they dont make a $4000 race block for a 428 huh?? Because it doesnt make sence too... Not Raggin or Braggin...Just tellin it like it is..
