2000 Excursion 4X4 - Lift Gate

The rar lift gate in my truck will not stay open on its own any longer! The wife (who has never liked the truck from day 1) keeps getting bonked in the head with the lift gate when she tries to load groceries.

I saw another thread about adding the 2WD lift cylinders to make the gate open another 2". I really do not need that - what I need are replacements for what I have.

My question is:

1. Where is the best place to get these?
2. How difficult are they to install?

Thanks guys -

Noel

I believe I read in previous posts NAPA is the place to get good replacement cylinders at the best price.

I would try FTE partguy.com. He has about the best prices for original parts unless you go to a salvage yard.

Lift struts are extremely simple to install. Takes about 10 min.

+1 to Napa, and +1 to extremely easy to install. Im gonna get the ones for 2WD as I need the two extra inches of head clearance.

The 2WD has less ground clearance so the struts will allow the hatch to open further to give greater room under it while open.

2WD EX is lower than 4WD EX about 2 inches and it fits in your garage door.
At the same time the lift gate needs to be a bit higher so you won't bonk your head.
That's what I've heard on this forum.

Very interesting that they'd manufacturer two different length struts just for 2wd vs 4wd, even considering teh differences.

That would have to cost them more than if they just put the 2wd struts on the 4wd.

Good luck getting them fixed. Shouldn't be too big of an issue
