My mechanic wants to replace a seal on the transmission. When he did the exhaust last week, he noticed the rear of the tranny was coated in fluid. He wants to replace the rear seal.
After doing a bit of research, I am thinking it might actually be the rubber seals that wear out on the transmission. Will this cause it to look like the rear seal is leaking. I mostly run highway miles. Truck currently has about 210,000 miles.
I concure. The rubber seals sometime wear out and leak. That is why they are replaced with metal inserts. But if you don't do much heavy dirting then they won't wear out that fast. The rear extension housing seal can go bad, get a crack in it or whatever and fluid will leak. Might as well replace all that can leak while under there.
Check and make sure that all of the oil isnt coming from the top shifter tower gasket. When it leaks from the top-the oil will coat the rear and the middle of the transmission. It is possible only this shifter tower upper cover is the source of all of the leakage--and this can be corrected without removing the transmission. Replacing the tower gasket would be lower cost than replacing the rear seal and the top gasket
This was the source of all of my leakage in my 110k 18 year old transmission. Most/many M5R2 s are destroyed because of this leakage which allows the tranny to run without adequate lubricant.
