I need some help diagnosing what i think is a bad starter motor. when i turn the key i hear a sort of grinding sound, all most as if the truck was all ready started, but it isn't. then i let go off the key and try again. usually it starts up on the second try but today it took a couple of trys to get her going. Once it is running everything seems to run as normal. Any one have any input on this one?...thanks in advance.
You might want to check the starter solenoid before you replace the starter. Also check the heavy gauge wire connections to see that they are clean and tight.
Solenoid is under the hood on the passenger side fender wall. There is a heavy cable running from the battery to the solenoid and, on the other side, another heavy cable running to the starter.
You can test the solenoid by taking a pair of heavy pliers and hold one handle against one of the solenoid's terminals and the other handle against the other terminal. If the starter runs smoothly, the solenoid is bad. If the starter makes the grinding sound, then the starter is bad.
