What is this?

So today when I was checking the power to my glow plugs. I noticed something was broke, but I haven't been able to find what it was.

On the passenger side of the glow plug harness, at the front (closest to the grill). There was a plug in the top of the engine, that had 2 prongs on it. THe connector was part of the glow plug wire harness. I noticed it wasn't connected, and when I looked closer, I saw that the matching connector has 2 connection spots, and the plug thing on the engine had one of the connector tabs broken off. This is the only connection in the glow plug harness I can see that has 2 wires running into it.

What is this?

The sensor the harness is supposed to plug into is pretty close to that #1 glowplug, right? Sure seems to me like you're talking about the temperature sensor for the glowplugs, it tells the controller for how long to keep them working depending on coolant temperature - hot engine makes for just a few seconds glow time, cold engine gets the full 15-20 seconds.

It looks like most the tempterature sensors I could find only have 1 spade type connector on it. The one I am referring to has 2.

They say a picture is worth 1000 words. So I figured I'd make use of my new picture phone.

Okay ... so the YELLOW circle is the part in question. This is the location, sorry I couldn't get a good enough picture of it.

And another question ... what is the connector circled in green supposed to be hooked up to? As you can see, it's not hooked to anything at the moment.

(Also, notice the fuel injector and it's NEW return lines!!! )

I missed that question,,dyoung is correct, the sensor would be installed where the 1" plug is next to it. That picture also shows us you have a 80s truck with a C 6 tranny

Correct! 1985 F250 with the 6.9.

Love the truck so far, will be better once my new motorcraft glow plugs arrive, and I can fix this temp sensor (if that's what it is).

Here is the picture you were trying to post.

Coolant temp switch, turns on the cold start timing advance and fast idle at coolant temps below 112 degrees.

The other connector is the tach sensor connector.

Duh, of course it is, completely forgot about that! And yes, that connector in green is for the tach sender, like several people already mentioned.

Okay ... so I went to OReily Auto Parts, and told them I needed a coolant temperature switch. They brought out one that has post type connectors, and not the blades that my current one does. He spent a while looking all over and we couldn't find anything that looked like what is in my truck. Where do I get this part? What exactly is it named?

I Wish my dang manuals would get here! Thanks y'all!

I've always had better luck with Napa for those types of things. Napa online lists three sensors two coolant sensors and one engine temp sensor. I think a coolant sensor is the one you need but not positive of that.

That switch opens at 112 degrees, closed below 112.

The temp switch in the drivers side head turns on the engine overheat light, can't remember exactly where it closes at and it only has one terminal.

To get the replacement switch for what you have, Ford or International.
