Question 351windsor with major problems

Hi yall I have a 351windsor and I had to put a new distributer in it, got it running and now the motor is shaking realy bad(not from a broken motor mount or stand) and it is back-fireing(but no matter where I turn the distributer it pretty much runs the same) what could be the cause. P.S. On a auto light 2100 carb is the vacume advance supossed to hook-up to the upper or lower vacume piece.

Sounds like you messed up the firing order, it should be 13726548 with cyl #1 on passenger side front and the distributor turns counterclockwise.

I have my firing order correct and it won't stay running unless you give it the gas.

I agree with Conanski. Double check your firing order first.

Is is an electronic or points type distributor? Are your points set correctly?

The dist should be hooked to manifold vacuum.

I bet your off 180. Pull number one plug and bring it up on compression first. Then pull your dis and drop it in right.

So how can the truck run 180 out. But it does shake vilently, back fire, and can't stay running unless you give it some gas.

My 68 turned into my daily driver for about the last 9 months so no new mods. The 01 F250 I bought new still hasn't had a single problem other than the rattle that brought me to this site 8 years ago.

It may still run, but it is attempting to fire in the wrong cylinder sequence. On an 8 cyl engine, there is a cylinder firing every 90* of crank travel. So there is more of a chance to get one to fire at the right moment to make it run. Getting a 4 cyl to run 180* out is not as likely.

Well, that's a good thing that you haven't had any problems then.
