Spare wheels

Hello everyone,
I have two questions.

First, what year did they start with the tire pressure sensors?
Second, I have purchased another set of wheels for my 08 SD. I do not know if the sensors are there or not, if I have to install the sensors will they automatically work with the truck or do I have to train them. The truck came with 18" and I have aggressive tires for winter. I purchased a set of aluminum 20" for summer treads, so I do not want to have to break the tires down everytime I switch wheels, so I will install sensors on the 20's if they are not there.

Thanks
Jeremy

'08 was the first year for TPMS, but it did not start till Job 2 which would be trucks built on or after 07/30/07.

There is a potential problem with what you plan on doing though. The TPMS is set to monitor the pressure of the factory installed 18" wheels which are set to a certain pressure. When you put on the 20" wheels which will require a lower pressure when compared to the current 18" tires there is a high probability that it will set a low pressure warning even if the sensors are there or you have them installed. The sensors used are the same for the 18" and 20" wheels as the low pressure set points the TPMS system is looking for is stored on the vehicle in the ICM and not the sensor its self. The sensor only transmits the current pressure...

I thought that some of the guys here figured out that the system just looks for a difference in the readings of the sensors. So if one tire was 10psi (just a made up number not sure what it really is) lower it would turn on the light. If all tires were set to the same lower pressure the light does not come on. I could be wrong on this, but I'm pretty sure i read that here somewhere.

The 20's actually require a little more pressure than the 18's.

I could have swore it was the other way around. I know that the 20's require 65 psi at all corners, but thought the 18's require more, especially in the rear...

That is how most systems work. You shouldn't have a problem setting the new sensors for the 20's as long as the relearn procedure doesn't require a scantool.
