Oil Filters?

I have been looking for information on how to replace the factory small oil filter with a larger one on my 2000 V-10. I was hoping to find some cross reference part number that would fit.
No luck so far but I did find some interesting info on oil filters.
Engine Oil Filter Study
Try searching "Engine Oil Filter Study" I tried to post a link but it dont work for some reason.

I think that with the thinner viscosity oil used in our engines today, the need for larger oil filters doesn't exist. Back in the day when you could use 20W40 or the likes, a larger filter was available to get the oil flowing back out of the filter into the engine quicker. Plus modern filters (and I only use Motorcraft) do a much better job filtering than the old school filters.

Also, the tighter fitting parts and better manufacturing mean less blow-by. That means less oil contamination. That in turn means less filtering is needed. If you are really concerned about more filter capacity, try the Mobil1 extended interval filters. They have more media inside.

I agree with the above post. I run AMSOIL 5-20 in my '01 V10 with the AMSOIL filter. The oil and filter are guaranteed for 1 year or 25,000 miles. For me that is one change a year and they guarantee no mechanical breakodown do to oil issues.

My thought was that a larger oil filter would give more filtering capacity. Just for example: How can that Amsoil filter go for 25,000 miles before needing to be changed? Isn't it the same size as the stock filter? How does it hold 25,000 miles worth of dirt?

OK, just in case you dont know. I just got some specs from "Engine Oil Filter Study".
The Fram PH-8A filter only has 195sq inches of filtering area
TG-8A 248sq inches
Mobil 1 351 sq inches
MotoCraft FL-1A 400 sq inches

I think I would trust the Motocraft filter to last the longest but I dont think I would go 25,000 miles before a change.

just a note on your info.. Im almost positive that your V10 will use a motocraft FL-820s filter

the silicon anti drainback valve (the "s" in the part number) is almost a requirement on these trucks in my opinion, but you have to pay more to get that feature on most filters while the motorcaft is $3-$4 bucks. which the cost of the basic fram filter usually.

rebelyell618, Yes I agree! But remember this study is just for one size filter.
This study took the most popular filter size and compared some popular brands.
So now that I found a good filter. I still want a larger one. I need to know what filter will replace the little factory filter?

You guys are really throwing money and time away. Go to AMSOIL .com and read it for yourself. I have been using AMSOIL in all my cars, trucks, ATV, Snowmobile, etc. for years. Use their synthetic oil and their EA oil filters and they are good for 25,000 miles or 1 year. The filters cost about $18 bucks and the oil is (0-20 weight) oil is about $9. OnCe a year oil changes are great. This is guarrenteed by AMSOIL, something I don't think any other manufacturer will do. Just so you know I do not sell AMSOIL I am just a loyal customer. You can buy the products yourself.

How Many?

MikesMayhem:

I am curious to know how many vehicles that you have personally driven 250,000 to 300,000 miles with no major/oil related problems using this 25,000 mile oil change interval.

Why don't you go have your oil analyzed at 25,000 miles by BlackStone. Oil still has a limit to how much soot and other contaminants it can hold, and there is no full-flow oil filter in existence that can filter those contaminants out. You know what happens when the oil can no longer take up any more soot and whatever else? You get sludge, all over your engine. Plenty of other oil companies claim 15,20,25,30 thousand mile oil changes with their synthetic oils, does anyone believe them? No. What makes amsoil different?

Amsoil does not make oil filters, they buy them from other companies, like many other oil filter brands. According to the oil filters revealed article, Amsoil filters are made by baldwin - which makes $3-5 oil filters for their automotive stuff. Their huge markup is prettty evident already when their prefered customer discount knocks the price down to $13

You could go to the auto store.. Find the filter that fits your truck ..Then go to the bigger filters & match one up.... As long as the threads are the same & gasket in the same place it should work...??? I use a bigger truck filter on a 302 HO that uses the small filter....25,000 miles on oil change....I wonder what it looks like under the valve cover ???

I'm not trying to stir the pot, just making a suggestion as to an alternative to the traditional 3000 mile oil change. As to my personal experience I have had an 85 Corolla with 276,000 and 1990 prelude that had 265,000 that I had to get rid of because it was so rusted, a 1996 Mazda ranger with 235,000 that I sold 2 years ago and is still running like a champ, a 2002 Chryler minivan with 180,000 still going strong, a 2002 Buick Regal with 135,000 miles. A few friends have almost 280,000 on their Chevy trucks. All were changed once a year at or near the 20,000 to 25,000 mile interval. The old AMSOIL filters were only good for 6 months so you had to pull and replace the filters and top off the oil. The EA are relatively new and are now warrantied to 25,000 miles or 1 year. My point is that there are alternatetives and AMSOIL will back there promise. It was a hard switch for me originallly but when I talked to more people that had success, I switched. I'm sure if I still had some of the vehicles they would be fine I just don't keep all my vehicles over 300,000 miles. I don't care who manufactor's the filters for AMSOIL, I like the warranty.
