Im looking at adding a intercooler to my wife's 7.3 idi. buying a kit is a bit expensive so I was wondering how hard it would be to make one myself with a cleaned out radiator from a small car. It doesnt matter how difficult it might be im just concerned about making things work for less money.
But according to Dave, intercoolers don't help these motors all that much compared to more modern DI designs, I would be worried about a radiator causing too much turbulence, and thus actually hurting your performance, instead of enhancing it.
I just thought of a perfect test if you have a rad handy, take a leaf blower or some kind of other high output blower and put it on one side of the rad, and then put your hand on the other side and see what the air feels like coming out, if it feels alot weaker than what the air would feel like coming straight from the blower, then its causing way too much turblence and won't work, but if the stream feels strong, it won't be as strong as it would straight from the blower, then the idea just might work
I think you would be better off wrapping the exhaust all the way to the turbo in header tape to help keep in more heat, thus more exhaust pressure, thus a better spooling turbo.
hehe I like jimmy Neutron! Thats a good idea for the test ill have to try that and the exhaust wrapping thing is a nice inexpensive thing to help performance out.
Frostysdriver is sitting right next to me. She is my wife and being that i do most of the work on our rigs i got the name frostysmechanic (she helps alot too) plus im in the navy as a construction mechanic working with the seabees.
Don't waste Your money on them. Get the most efficient IC You can get Your hands on. For the amount of boost We run, You won't need one that'll cover the whole front of the rad. IF You get one that's very efficient.
Our coolant temps are already pretty high when running high boost/EGT's.
Yea, i didnt realize that you were 17 til i looked at your profile
Yupp, I'm the young gun around here. I'm generally hated on by the ageists, but I know they are just jealousy of youthfullness and studliness they just wish they could have again
im a little bit younger than you dean, and mostly how i learned so much on these motors is from searching in past forums and spending hours of reading, so much that my parents actually have to find a crow bar and pry me off
We don't hate on you, and we even remember what we thought when we were young.
And we are also aware of mistakes we made along the way.
Some things can be taught, some things have to be learned on your own.
As I type this my legs are snapping and popping, I really wish I had listened to those older guys when I was younger about taking better care of my body instead of running wearing boots and jumping places I should have used a ladder.
So I was indestructable once upon a time myself, then I got older and started paying for my thinking.
This is more of a been there did that sort of thing.
