First let me start by saying I've read all the archive post on this issue and still have a few question. I ran my 6.0 to almost empty today, I normally don't go below 1/4. I figure I had about 3 gallons left. I went to my normal station an haven't ever had a fuel issue. I filled the tanl to full and drove off. The gauge didn't move at all and the dummey light stayed lit. I didn't have the key in the ignition while filling up. I figured that after I restarted a time or two the gauge would go to full, it didn't. I haven't changed the fuel filters in awhile so I went out an picked them up. Changed them out an started it up. Still no change, I do hear a sound that's not normal like a plastic bag being deflated. The truck doesn't seem to be starved for fuel or acting wierd. I just don't want to be stranded anywhere. Also the mpg computer is reading correctly. What could be the issues? I was planning on disconnecting the battery in the morning to see if that helps but I doubt it will since I didn't leave the key in the ignition. Thanks
Mine did the same thing after I bought it of course when I bought it diesel was 4 something and some change and I was worried but after about a couple hours it moved on up to full. How long has it been?
The trouble with fuel gauges sometimes is "the only thing they tell you is that you hava a gauge" (Quote from flying days). Had a 92 Bonneville SSEI with all the electronic doo-dads and when I filled up and started the engine the gauge did it's cycle and promptly went to dead empty until I drove about 20 Kms and then it popped back up and showed full. go figure! Maybe try drive a few miles and see if it pops back to normal?
IMO, something's not right, or it's just one of those quirky things that happens. My gauge has always worked whether I leave the engine on while fueling up, or turn it off.
Are you concerned about the sound or the gauge? Ignore the gauge, the sending unit is probably stuck and one good bump and it will correct itself (click and clack once said, "the fuel gauge is only accurate when it shows full or empty, ignore anything in between). i am not sure about the sound you are hearing. Are you sure you put the lower filter in correctly? Sometimes it will not seat correctly but that generally causes running issues. Take another look and make sure the black cap is sitting against the HFCM housing. If not remove the cap, re-seat the filter and reinstall the cap.
Well the gauge did eventually return to full. So I wasn't too concerned after the post and gauge. But yesterday I'm drive home and notice that the water in fuel lights on while driving down the road. It went off after about 30 min. I usually use the ford brand fuel additive in the winter but ran out last week. I've never had any issues like this before. Is it likely that the fuel additive was the reason I didn't have any of these issues before?
