429-460 flywheel

I put this post on the 73-79 forums with little response. I will try here.

I am putting a 429 in my 78 4x4 with the 4 speed and have been looking for a flywheel. I done a search on here and found a 390 or pre 79 460 will fit but done a search on autozone and found both but each has different part numbers. I searched for both using 2 wheel drive f250 with the 4 speed. What one should I use and what are some issues I might run into. I want to use a 12" clutch but read in one post about some bellhousing clearance issues. I am using my 351m bellhousing and it had a 12" clutch in it. I really don't want to spent the $300 for the L&L flywheel if I can keep from it. I did read about some issues with the flywheel thickness. Any help would be appreciated.

I don't know much on this subject, but when I got my 460, it had a 429 crank in it. I swapped another 460 crank in it and used the same flywheel without problems. I am running an automatic however, and my block is from '69.

Strange, but the blocks for a 460 and 429 are identical. That is a 4.36" bore. So if your engine had a 429 crank in it, it was in fact a 429 not a 460 since the crank is the difference between the 2, plus pistons of course. Which means your post is impossible to do.

Pink panther if you can get the flywheel for a pickup 460 78 or older that would be the one to buy. The guys running the 390 flywheel are doing it because they can find them in a junkyard cheap

I was told that the 460 in 78 was not an option but autozones website offers it. Maybe for a swap. The junk yards around here are bare. Scrap prices where high this summer and they scraped everything.
