5.4 Stroker kits

Is putting a Stoker in your 5.4 a good idea or not? I've heard a lot about it and every one says that it has to long of a stoke already.

5.4 stroke is 4.165, already plenty long. I can't find anything:

All I see here is strokers for 4.6 (3.75, takes you to 297 cid)

ModMax - 4.6 and 5.4 Modular Experts

A December '07 comment here, but nothing else:

5.4 stroker crank coming out soon. 5.4 guys inside - ModularFords.com

He mentions "Pro-line", but I can't find anything in 45 seconds, so I give up.

When Ford designed these engines, the way to more HP was supercharging. You can see GT level engines with 1000 hp using twin turbos--stock (albeit GT) internals.

You can do a small overbore, but without more work, you'll get what, 10 hp or so?

Stand by for more.

thanks, so i talked to a guy about the stoker and he said that there is no such thing as to long of a stroke. and it makes since cause if you think about the 440 mopar and its stoke which was long to, but the stoked that motor as well. so thanks for the help and i hope that will also help evryone thats wondering about putting a stoker into their 5.4

No such thing as too long a stroke... Well, if it fits in the crankcase, the rod angle is workable, and piston speed is within the limits, then, yea, stroke on.

BTW the 440 was 4.32 bore, 3.75 stroke stock, so going to a 4 or 4.5 stroke nets a pretty big increase on an already big motor.

That stroker you linked to is no doubt a good one a $2695. You can get a stroker crank for an FE for under $500--so it must be good. What did he say about rods and pistons?

What did you want to know about the rods and pistons.

He better be getting very good ones if he's planning on adding stroke to a 5.4L. Realize the only real "high-revving" 5.4L Ford made was the 4V 5.4L in the 2000 Cobra R's. Ford saw fit to put Carillo billet rods in those engines to withstand high rpm abuse with only 380hp. The 5.4L piston speeds get insane. Don't think so? A redlined Cobra R's pistons are moving much faster than a Formula 1's pistons at redline. Incredible amount of strain and why you won't find a cheap stroker crank for a 5.4L...they are all billet. You can buy a OEM forged 5.4L crank from FRPP for $400 and it's good for 1000+ hp. Not much of a reason to get anything else. All that said there really isn't much point in stroking one or even boring one out unless you are looking to build a race engine.

--I went back to the link, they list the kit with rods and pistons for $3995. If you just go .030 over you net a whopping 25 or so cubes.... Good for what, 20 to 30 hp unless you perform other magic to the engine.

That site also sells a supercharger set up--it says kits. These list for a similar heart-stopping $3700 to $4660, but my guess is you get far more than 30 hp out of your efforts.

As ol' Shelby said, "cubic inches or cubic dollars..." The mod engines are more like cubic dollar engines, not cubic inch.

ymmv, good luck with it.

Why is every one after horse power. The only way to get your max hp is with high rpm's torque is what wins races comparing hp and torque is like comparing 500 ponies to 30 clysdales and you don't need nhigh rmps for torque most engines achieve max torque around 4500 rpm.

OK, so the 25 cubes and $4000 buys how much torque? Compared to the huffer?

Perhaps you could get a discount if you did both. Hey, your truck, nothing wrong with either, but this started out on the merits of a longer stroke for the already long stroke 5.4.

IMO, bang for the buck is NOT in a stroker crank for this engine.

Ymmv, but not by much....

The problem with stroking a 5.4l is the piston coming out of the cylinder to much @ BDC. It causes excessive wear on the piston skirt and isn't very reliable compared to a regular stroked 5.4l IMO you should look into a big bore kit. Much more reliable for about the same performance.

Agreed. Bore it out to its limits and then put a 8-9psi twin screw on it. I be willing to bet you would be north of 450hp at the wheels. And have a very very reliable engine.
