ok, so the young one put the new starter in the 88 this morning, and it starts again like it did 21 years ago.
but i have a question. did not the 88 come with a direct drive starter??
a gear reduction came out of it, and the truck has never been inside a mechanics shop since the day i got it with 4 miles on it, and i never put a starter on it.
i know they are the same for 83 to 94, but i thought the stock started was a direct drive, and the gear reduction was an aftermarket starter up to the introduction of the powerstroke, when they switched over to a stock gear reduction unit.
As far as I know, only the 83 and 84's came with the direct drive starter, I know my buddy's 85(engine is in an 88 crew now) and my 86 both had gear reduction starters, the one on my 86 was for sure factory.
all 7.3s and some 6.9s had the Mitsu gear reduction starters. I have a Part # at home for a Nippondenso starter that interchanges with the 7.3 ones. It is for a Case Loader. So if you like i can post it up. I have not looked into it very far yet but that is the way I am planning to go as they are supposed to last alot longer then the mitsu ones and i believe are a lot more powerful.
ahhh ok. i was not aware it was only the 83 and 84 that got the direct drive.
21 years out of a starter ain't bad i guess. it probably would have lasted longer, but i have to reseal the engine. every gasket on the dang thing leaks, and the passenger side valve cover is the worst. oil actually poured out of the starter.
it leaks just about a quart every 100 miles.
it is going into the shop next week for a complete recondition of the frame, a new cab, dump body, and the dual wheel setup is going back on it as i have more of a need for it as a dump truck than i do as a pickup, and while it is apart i am going to re-gasket it.
