I replaced my water pump and thermostat a couple of months ago, and now I have intermittent heat. The heater coil is only a couple of years old and is not leaking. It has always heated up right away. Now, when I turn the fan on, it gets cold. I wait a few minutes and it heats up again. Vacuum leak? Leaking vacuum canister? Bad thermostat? It worked fine the first couple of weeks but now it's intermittent. It gets cold here in the evenings and mornings and it would be nice to have my heater back. It's driving me nuts! Any suggestions? Thanks in advance.
I mean't heater core is only 2 yrs old. I checked the hoses. One is hot and one is not. Heater core plugged? Can I switch hose connections at the core to unplug, or flush with a garden hose? Or, just replace the heater core again.
Have you checked your by-pass hose? if it is old it could have kinked or collapsed when you changed the t-stat. also make sure the little vacuum hose just above the heater hose's is intact and tight. then if all that checks out I would pull off the return hose and pump it into a bucket to see if you have flow and if it starts to heat up.
I had replaced the by-pass hose when I installed the water pump and t-stat. As far as I can see, the vacuum hose above the heater hoses is intact. Which heater hose is the return hose? Today, I felt both heater hoses after running and the inner was hot while the outer was lukewarm. Does that help? Thanks!
Could be an air bubble in the heater core.Sometimes you can clear it out by letting it come up to temp and then rev the engine a couple of times,if heat starts pouring out then its good to go.Other wise you may have to disconnect one hose (doesn't matter which one, usaually the easyist one to get off the waterpump) and fill the heater core with coolant.
Nixvet , that could be a vacuum problem . Vacuum controls the amount of rad fluid to your heater core, as u switch your heater on.I think the culprit may be the temperature control valve. That would be a first check. The other culprit may be the thermostat, and yes i have installed new stats to have them go bad immediatly Good luck TR
also remove glove box remove cover from heater core and remove ink pen that fell down through the defrost duct, they wedge in the fresh air door, at least that is where I find my ink pens
