I have crawled under the truck and removed the undercoating on my transfer case It is the Dana 21. I don't know if dana made another because I found a listing in my repair book that says Dana 21, NP203, Np205, Np208, Borg Warner 1345, tranfer cases were used. Does anyone have a Dana 21 that has a 4 Low Gear?
according to one of my books 1n 1973 only, there was a one speed constant mesh transfer case only offered on the F100, has anybody got one of these, if not that is a pretty rare option
If I was to make a guess... Dana 21's were probably used mostly with the T-18 4 speed and other manual trannies with grandma low.
The T-18 had grandma low, with the max speed of 10mph depending on axle ratio, so a two speed transfer case was probably seen as redundant.
I have to agree with that, my truck with 3.50 gears, on 38's in 1st has low end gearing to be fairly capable, for just mild stuff. Obviously some new gearing is in the near future, but for now it works fine.
