hold on.... are you really sure the chrome is all gone????? I have seen exhaust stacks look that bad before and a simple SOS pad and a little elbow grease made them look pretty darn good...plain steelwool will work but I like the soap in the SOS myself. Sure is worth a try!!!!
Roger, I am with Morris on your question. I do not know of a practical method to strip chrome other than what would be done by a plating shop. I am not familiar with the construction of the crager wheels. From the pix it appears that the outer rims are steel and the inner centers are alloy and everything is plated. Given that combo, strong chemical dips are not an option, Unfortunately you will find that anyplace that the chrone plating is welll adhered will not remove readily by sandblasting them. In short the wheels are well aged and attempts at reversing the aging process will not work well. All of that said if I were in your position and you are just looking for the ride this summer, I would sanblast all of the loose and peeling chrome. The sandblast process will rough up the solid chrome a little (but not much-chrome is very hard). I would then prime the wheels and drive it.
I had some old cragers similiar to thosewhich was pitted also I found out the hard way that they weren't safe I quess the metal was fatigued and they broke.

I agree, if this is the worst one, use a little Navel jelly on the rust, take some fine steel wool and clean up the center part, what isn't chrome should shine up pretty good with a buffing wheel. Then either sand down the rim and paint it or find a set of trim rings to cove them up. To prevent the centers from oxidizing, just spray and wipe down once in a while with Gibbs Penetrating oil. It is amazing and prevents rust on bare metal and keeps magnesium (and any other alloy) from oxidizing.
You know the old saying cheap, fast, good; pick two. You can probably substitute easy for any one of these.
Ever hear of Naval Jelly for removing rust, mates?
It's been around for over a 100 years as I recollect & if it didn't work, it wouldn't still be for sale to remove rust from metal surfaces.

Reason: Typo
Those Cragars are an aluminum center with a steel rim. I would definitely not use acid!!
Ross, you are correct. Its a shame for the back are not all that bad, some sos pads and they may be great. The fronts are to far gone. The chrome is flaking off and the centers are pitting.
I might just look for some steel rims at a junkyard and paint them up. Dont know what to do?????
I wouldn't spend much money on trying to fix them up much. This is the time of year when there are a few automotive swap meets are around and you might find a decent set of rims for less than $100. Also, check your local craigs list, shoppers papers, etc. Sometime you can find a bargain without spending much money.
How do you think they got rusty in the first place?
Back in the van craze of the late 70s I had a set of slotted aluminums on my E150 and some dog would come by every night and mark his territory (could have been a tomcat too I guess). I took some stiff wire and made a loop out of it and hung it on the tire so it didn't touch any metal and hooked up an old fence charger from the battery to the hanger, after about two nights, no more pee.
yep.... i agree with the "toss em & get sumpthin else" guys on this one,
even a set of ol' stock steelies.....paint em up, getta cheap set of moons & trim rings.
always a classic look....i did this temporary on my panel 5 yrs ago & have since tried other wheels on & don't like the look and fall back to the moons & rings.....perhaps someday i'll getta set of those pricey moon & ring wheels.

If you were closer and I would have known last month I would have give you the chrome smoothies I took off my truck. I gave them to my brother who gave them to our Uncle.
