Why are the later model 223, 1/2" head bolts quite a bit longer than the earlier years 7/16" head bolts? I'm putting a later head on my rebuilt block that is bored for 7/16" bolts. I need to purchase new head bolts anyway. Should they be longer than the originals? Both heads are the same height. Washers are available to bush from 1/2 to 7/16".Thank youBob
I think the length is not as important as the diameter (as long as you're going thicker). If your new head calls for a 1/2" bolt, I would find out about drilling and tapping your block for 1/2" bolts. I would be a little apprehensive about using bushings/washers on my head bolts. Look into it some more.
The washers shouldn't be a problem murph. They are made/sold by ARP for that purpose. Apparently the hot rod ford guys use them to put 351 heads on a 302. I have read on the other FTE forum that the 7/16 bolts are known for breaking during torqueing on this motor. I agree boring the block to 1/2" would be good but $$ are an issue to. Thanks Bob
