I have an 05 F250 XLT, I went to the local quick lube place this afternoon for an oil change. While they were checking all the fluids they pulled the tranny dip stick and out came a whole lotta gunk on the tip. They showed it to me and it looked like coffee grounds. All the guys in the shop looked at it and said it looked like metal fragments. I thought they were just trying to sell me a flush or something but they suggested I go strait to the dealership and have them check it out. I went to the service dept at my local dealer and they were taken back considering I have 36k miles. One of the techs came out and checked the dipstick, he said it wasn't metal shavings but had no effin idea what it was. He mentioned something about a burnt additive or something. He said to make an appointment so they can drop the pan and take a look. I haven't put anything in the trans but i did buy the truck used. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
I have no idea, but different dealers will treat things differently. If it were me, I'd drain about a pint of fluid into a clean container that you can ship off to a lab later if necessary. I'd also make it very clear to the service advisor that you are not authorizing any work to be done on your truck beyond pulling the transmission pan or any work that would be covered under warranty with your $100 deductible.
You don't want someone to flush the system and get rid of everything until you can figure out what is going on. Also be sure to write a thank you not to your local quick lube for alerting you to this and not just trying to sell you a flush.
ditto on not doing a flush right now. I think that I would go on the basis that you have never added a thing and you bought it used. Did you buy it from the dealer that you are having work on it?
