Hey guys, I'm new here to this forum, and have been looking for performance related information for 302s and whatnot since I have a 1988 302 F-150. But all I see here is a bunch of redneck mods like lift kits mud tires and super loud exhausts!!! Hahahaha I bet you're all getting mad now...
Who here actually has a fast truck in the 1/4 mile? I'm talking 14 seconds and under dudes. And what did you do to it to get it fast? Come on guys someone here must mod their truck for speed!
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 23-Apr-02 AT 06:40 AM (EST)]Well, my truck is "slow", but it will climb over most crap and push
5 feet of snow, I have my other toys that are built for speed.
FYI, 14 seconds isn't fast or quick, it's embarrassing.
Try perfomance and general engine building forum, those guys will set you straight.
First time I've ever been called a redneck, not sure how to feel about that?>!?

Rednecks!?!Well ok now, lets see.I do have AT tires, huh? But they all are the same size and make, and I did not pay more for the tires and wheels than the truck itself.Loud Exhaust? huh? nope, I can still hear my radio.Lift? huh? yes, but its not made out of wooden 4x4,s and all-thread. I dont sport a gunrack in my back window or have anything resembleing a confederate flag on my truck.I have all my teeth and havent dated any of my sisters or cousins, that I know of. Nope!!, I cant be a Redneck.I dont think you will find many around here either. You may be just lost. Are you sure you didnt take a wrong turn at that last holler?? Well you got one thing going for you, you drive a FORD!!
Dudes settle down! I was joking about the redneck comment (obviously) but the kind of mods I'm interested in are not the kind that seem to be most prevelant on this forum. I just wondered if anybody has gone out with the purpose of making their truck fast. Lightnings are quick from the factory but has anyone tried that on a standard F150? I know 14 seconds isn't anything to brag about compared to Mustangs and Camaros, but it's faster than our trucks are now (I'm guessing our trucks do about 17 seconds) and I was trying to be realistic. It would probably cost over 10k to get in the 12s. Gears are great, and headers with true duals are also good mods. But what about lowering kits, drag suspensions, performance heads/intake/maf sensors/power adders!!!. Trucks can do more than just mud around you know!
We know you were joking, but most guys down in these forums have 4x4s.
The truth is I never built a truck for quickness, my GTO is a high 10 second car, my trucks are built for work or playing off road.
If I was limited to one vehicle and I wanted it to be quick, I don't think I would use a truck, just my likes, I know trucks can run too.
I have plenty over 10k in my pontiac, and thats only in the motor, lots of other things to do to get a car in the 12's
Lets face it, racing a truck is like racing the box a fast car came in.
There has to be a few guys up in the f150 forum or performance engine building forums that have got their trucks going good.
OK, I don't date my sister (well alright, I don't have a sister) and my teeth are also intake but I do have a 4X4 and somehow my building it has taken the turn towards performance. It started as a 4x4 play toy but as I worked away and blew the old "M" out of it the 460 steered me towards wanting more. With a house and family I needed a truck for hauling but I had the itch for speed. So I now have a nicely modified truck that is a 4X4 but goes like a scalded cat, at least until there's a turn in the road. When I finish the top end swap shortly I hope to get to the track for the May test and tune night. I'll post some numbers when I'm done. Different strokes for different folks, this keeps me happy.

Hey don't feel bad last year i had to get rid of my rolling gas station (here's comes the c word) a 78 chevy stepside 454 30 over big block ,fairbanks turbo 400 w/5500stall converter, ford 9 inch w/4:88 gears and on the bottle. The best i ever did on the track was 11:80s with slicks my average was around 12:20s.I used to love messing around with the streeters on fridays and saturday nites boy i sure miss those times
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 25-Apr-02 AT 11:59 PM (EST)]So what do you have to do to a 454 to need a 5500 stall converter? That would be about redline on a stock 454, or any other big block. Hell, I have a built 302 with worked-on factory rods. I don't like holding it to much over 6000. It'll do it, but I don't want to have to pick up the pieces if it breaks.
By the way, the engine I just mentioned is in a 65 F100 with a Mustang Cobra T5 and 3.70's. I had it on the interstate today at 75 in third gear. Shifted to fourth and buried the speedometer big time. Slid into fifth and was still climbing. Then I remembered that my 9 inch has been making funny noises. The thought of a rearend breaking at well over a hundred MPH scared me enough to slow back down to a sane speed. My 99 Lightning would just hit 140. Since my 302 is putting out 358 horsepower at 6000 RPM (2 less then my Lightning), logic says it will nearly hit 140. No aero package is the only reason it won't, cuz it weighs nearly a grand less then my Lightning.
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 26-Apr-02 AT 08:35 AM (EST)]So what do you have to do to a 454 to acomadate a 5500 stall converter alot nothing in that motor was stock except the bolts some of what i remember square port closed chamber heads,640 lift 310 duration comp cam,11.5 to 1 pistons with childs rods, nos systems adjustable nitrous and 850 holley. The motor came out of a pro gas vega that my cousin and i were running until he wrecked it we put the motor and trans in the truck for kicks it was tough to drive on the street but it was fun
