Alternators and generators use different regulators so if you buy an alternator that requires a regulator you'll need to buy one.
But, as suggested, I would definately recommend you buy a "one wire" or GM style alternator that has the regulator built into the alternator housing. Get rid of that ugly regulator AND all the wiring!
I have one and it's fantastic. I got mine at "Tuff Stuff" for about $125. The instructions were very good and clear, and the tech service guys were great!
Well, no, But I have a 390 in my truck and I bought a polished stainless steel bracket so it would be "pretty." If you call the tuff stuff guys, they know what you will need, and if they don't have one, they will make one - probably have brackets or know where to get them too.
Ran that one wire right to the BATT terminal of the starter solenoid! Ignition stays the same!
