E4OD question

My 1996 F150 I-6 E4OD is gong into fail safe mode almost every time i drive it after a certain amount of time on the road. The code from the PCM is P1728 and from what i have found on the internet could mean almost anything. My question is will any E4OD fit on my truck? Does the bell housing unbolt from the transmission in case i needed it for a new one? Any info would help..thanks everyone.

Might want to try a fluid/filter change before you throw in the towel on the tranny. Some more info would be helpful though. Are you getting noticeable slipping? Is it shifting hard? Any other symptoms you can think of?

The tranny has slipped twice but that's it. The fluid and filter have been changed. When the overdrive light does come on it shifts hard. If I turn off the truck and then turn it right back on then it shifts fine for a little bit. Then the light comes back on and it shifts hard again.

did you drain the convertor at the same time as filter change?

3/4 of the fluid is in the convertor.

remove the block rubber plug at bottom of convertor.

tap starter to get drain to align, 2 person job.

get a big pan.

change filter again.

you may have solved your problem.

it pulls out and allows access to the convertor.

then you need to remove the bolt out of the convertor to drain fluid.

remember a BIG drain pan not a little oil drain pan.

get fluid hot first.

even with no lift a very easy job.
