My 1996 F150 I-6 E4OD is gong into fail safe mode almost every time i drive it after a certain amount of time on the road. The code from the PCM is P1728 and from what i have found on the internet could mean almost anything. My question is will any E4OD fit on my truck? Does the bell housing unbolt from the transmission in case i needed it for a new one? Any info would help..thanks everyone.
Might want to try a fluid/filter change before you throw in the towel on the tranny. Some more info would be helpful though. Are you getting noticeable slipping? Is it shifting hard? Any other symptoms you can think of?
The tranny has slipped twice but that's it. The fluid and filter have been changed. When the overdrive light does come on it shifts hard. If I turn off the truck and then turn it right back on then it shifts fine for a little bit. Then the light comes back on and it shifts hard again.

did you drain the convertor at the same time as filter change?
hmm that doesnt sound bad at all especially with a lift...im assuming that there is a way to remove the block rubber plug through the bell housing?
sorry if its a stupid question but i really dont know.
