t-case troubles
most likely its a NP205 transfer case, use google or ebay for a rebuild kit. personally i cant see that draging it around with a bob cat causing the problems you describe.
"the one i there is making alsorts of nasty noises and grows i 2wd" rephrase this please
not sure how the hubs got messed up by them dragging, pushing or pulling. ( i leave my hubs locked in all winter and the transfer case in 2wd and have never had a issue
for a new or use t-case check ebay
I dont understand how a shop that had the diffs apart could have messed anything up.
Here is the thing that makes little sense. If the diffs were being workned on, then the d-shafts were probably out, so the vehicle would have just rolled around without resistance. If the diffs were not apart, and the d-shafts were still in, then the front hubs would have been unlocked, (not that this would matter either way) and zero problems would result, so the rear is connected, and all the place wold have to do is kick the trans into neutral, (or anything other than park if the trans is auto) and the thing will roll. Heak they could have put the t-case in neutral and things would have been fine. even if they did not, nothing should have happened.
I flat tow my 73 (on 44's by the way) and this cant be any different than tugging it around the yard with a bobcat.
Something else has to be wrong. This stuff cant just break. If you have a 205 t-case, it is a bullet proof case and will take more than what you described to damage it.
Regardless, re-build kits are available from a few of our sponsors. Here is a link to a bearing and seal kit:

As far as your lockouts go, they are either busted or they are fine, these work or they dont. Maybe they could use a cleaning, or they were installed incorrectly, and they will not engage.
