I'm a 73-96 Full-Size Ford guy,but the chance has come up for me to get a 2000 Ranger.A guy around the street has fallen on some hard times, and he's looking to sell his Ranger.I haven't talked to him yet,but I plan to in the next few days. It's a 2000,single cab with a 7 foot bed.I'm unsure of the motor,or the mileage.I hope to find this out in the next few days.He is asking 1,000 bucks obo.I have two questions,1,what is the average mileage this truck would have?I'm guessing 60,000.2,do ya'll think this is a good deal? All help is appreciated.
Heck yeah a 1,000$ is a good deal for a 2000 ranger, but it depends on what kind of shape it's in. Keep us posted once you learn more about it.
I took a better look at it today. The body is straight. The interior looks good too. It's a sport model with an Automatic.I still don't know what engine.I'm gonna try to get ahold of the owner tonight. If I get any more info i'll post it.

In a few minutes i'm headed over to the guy's house so I can take a look at the truck.I'll post all the details when I get back.
So I went and looked at the truck.I found out why the price is so low. It's got 180,000 miles on it.However, the engine was rebuilt about 30-40,000 miles ago. There is also a small tranny slip when going from 1st to 2nd gear. The tranny is a 4-Speed automatic. There is also a quiet knock in the motor, but it doesn't seem to affect the way truck runs. The owner let the truck idle the whole time I was talkin with him,and it ran fine.Other than that, the truck is in real great shape. It's got the 2.5 4 banger. The owner told me he'd let it go for 800 bucks.I can't pass that up.I'm gonna go talk to him again tomorrow to work on a final deal.He said he drives the truck to work everyday, and it never gives him any problems.
Can anyone tell me what this knock in the engine could be?If I take ownership of the truck i'll make a vid and post it here so ya'll can hear it.
An engine knock usaully isn't a good thing, it could be a rod. Realistacally I would look at it as if I were buying a body. As you may need the tranny rebuilt and a motor. The good thing is there's alot of 2.5 lima's a round at decent prices, or just buy a remanufactured long block from jasper. As long as the truck runs OK, you could continue to drive it untill something major gives out. Now keeping in mind the truck may need a tranny rebuild and a motor, is the body worth a 1,000$. If it's clean with a nice interior, I would say yes. It will be worth putting some money into to make your self a nice little truck that should be decent on gas. I myself perfer rangers over a larger truck as I've had 7 of them. There the right size for me. Let us know more as you get the beast home and really look it over.

The knock doesn't really seem to affect the way it runs,so i'll most likely end up driving it til somethin gives out.I was also told that the tranny is in the beginning stages of slipping,so it should still have at least 1,000 miles on it.The body has some scratches, but i'm not looking for a show truck. The interior is in good condition. The guy told me that he will go as low as 800 bucks.I'm not really afraid of the knock or tranny slip, cause i'm a member of these fine forums, and I know ya'll will help me out.
I know where your comin from with the big trucks.I've got a 1980 F100,and my whole family has always owned Full-Size trucks. Two of my uncles have Rangers though, and my Girlfriend's Mom and Grandpa both have Rangers too,so they're kinda in the family also.lol.
As a small heads up,i'm only 16 years old,so some of my questions may look a bit stupid.I'm new to Rangers, and i've never really worked on anything but Full Size Fords. So please bear with me,and i'll try to keep the stupid questions at a minimum!
To me this sounds like buying stock, spend the money if you can afford to lose it but don't if you can't. You sound like you have some understanding of what you are getting into and if you can work on one truck you are way ahead in terms of working on another. If the body and frame are in good shape and you had to drop some money into the engine and tranny you still might have quite a truck for that small of an investment.

Well I went over and test drove it,and it drives fine. The knock is barely noticeable, and sounds like something in the head. The tranny doesn't really slip,it's more of a jolt when it goes from 1st to 2nd.Im getting an awesome deal in my opinion.I'm picking it up on Saturday,so i'll be sure to take pics and get a really good look at it and i'll post all my findings.
The only stupid question is the one thats never ask. We all had to start somewhere. Thats why we have this forum, is to help people such as yourself and to make new friends. Were just one big ranger family here and I want to welcome you to that family. By all means, post up some pics when you get it home.

I really appreciate it man.I'll be sure to post pics after I finish crawling all over the truck.lol.
Well,I picked her up today.I'm really happy with it.For those who haven't heard the story,I was able to pick up a 2000 Ranger with a 2.5 I4 for 800 bucks. It runs like a top. Here are some pics.....
Hey, your "new" truck looks great. I hope you enjoy yours as much as I like mine. Why don't you change the transmission fluid as a part of your starting points. That may take care of the the shift bump. Let us know how it goes.
