I have a 1986 F250 w/a 351W Carter AFB Carb, dual gas tanks.
Here is my question...I recently replaced the fuel selector valve and all went fine.
Now, I am having intermittent stalling and sputtering of the engine.
When I went to locate the fuel filter, I was unable to locate any.
The Rubber fuel line from the Mechanical Fuel pump to the carb, does not have an inline filter, the connection at the carb is just a Barb type connection, and not a screw in type filter.
There is no filter monted on the rails or a cannister type resevoir.
The fuel lines from both tanks appear to be factory with the quick connectors at the selector valve.
I am assumiing I have the filter(s) in the tanks at the sending units.
How do I know for sure?
without dropping the tanks and pulling the sending units.
Does anyone know if the VIN deciphering can help?
I may need to drop the tanks, as the sending units do not read accurately, and I am wanting to have them read correctly.
I believe you should have a filter at the carb, a screw in filter with a barb inlet. If not I would add an inline. I don't think there are any filters in the tanks, just a screen.

No, there's a filter in the tank that attaches to the end of the sending unit, but they
deteriorate and fall apart and may not be effective after 20+ years. Adding an inline or
carb-mounted filter is a good idea.
If you have a carter carb, that is not original, and whoever installed it did not add a fuel filter. You should add a universal inline filter. If you get a clear one, you can somewhat monitor the fuel situation and that may help troubleshooting your problem.
Thanks for the input, I believe Franklin 2 is most likely correct, the engine is not an original (sorry forgot to mention) and when I drop the tanks to check the sending units at a later time, I will check the sending units for filters there.
