^^^ And thats some sound real world advice. That would make my decsison easier. Althoug I am one to mod and the 6.4's are just not mod friendly without definately voiding the warranty.

Thank you to all who responded. I feel a little better about at least looking at a new truck now and maybe even a late 6L. I'm not much into power for powers sake but I do like to be able to keep up going up the mountain. Again, thanks for the responses.

I am a new owner of a 2010 F250 4x4 Lariet (6.4). I bought it used in December 2011, and I went looking for a diesel truck 2009 or newer. I was lucky enough to find this 2010 for a very good price and with 21,500 miles on it when I first purchased it. I have been on one long trip with it (no tow) and the hand calculated mileage was 17.3 for the entire trip. I only tow a 20 foot boat with it and have not been on any out of town tow trips yet. I am a novice when it comes to diesel trucks, but I have been very pleased with the vehicle these past few months. I do stop and talk to any diesel owner I come across about their vehicles and have found out that F250/350 owners have been very pleased with the 6.4. I have read the posts here in our forum and keep track of issues as they come up. My brother in-law has an older 7.3 and is very pleased with his truck and does not plan on getting rid of it anytime soon. He lives in New England and the truck will probably rust around the engine before the engine gives up the ghost. A serious decison on your part coming soon, and a fun one. Once you make up your mind as to what you would like, search the internet to find the truck you have decided on, they are out there and we are getting into the time of the year when 2012's will be more marketable as the 2013's come on line. You might even get lucky like I was and find a low mileage 2010 or 2011.
Good Luck

Wow, talk about a resurrection.

He's been a happy 6.4 owner for a while. Sounds like you are as well.

Yes, I have had the 6.4L since june of 09 I think. 44,000 miles of mostly trouble free driving. However, if I was to get 17 MPG it would have to be down a mine shaft.

so have you been happy with or regreted you decision at all? I'm looking at a 2010 CPO right now but it has 68K miles and i saw low collant in it. they topped it off, pressure tested and let it run for an hour and said everything was good.

thanks for your insight

When I bought mine I had to have a DRW truck, my new (at that time) 5er was just uncomfortable towing with my SRW 7.3L. And, I got a great deal, oaid 30K dollars in june 09 for the truck with 4000 miles on it. So, I pulled the trigger quickly before somebody else bought it. And, my truck has worked great for 44,000 miles. I had the water in the CAC tubes thing and that was repaired and I had a leak in my lower fuel filter and that was repaired. Otherwise truck has been flawless, yet I drive it with great concern.

It's not what happened to me that troubles me, it's a case of what's happened to others that makes me nervous. The problem with the 6.4L is not that it fails often, it's that when it does the cost can be very high. We are all one tank of bad diesel fuel from a $12,000 fuel system replacment which Ford will not pay a dime of. That concerns me. There are many other things in this very complex engine that can cost a lot to repair. But, in truth I've had two chances to buy a 7.3L with less than 50K miles and I've passed on both trucks because I know they will not tow like the 6.4L will. It is a heck of a good towing truck, even better without all the DPF stuff. And I base this on having towed in the Rockies with both trucks. Even with a trailer that weighs 4000 pounds more the 6.4l out performed the 7.3. I mean you can just feel the power. Now, the 4.30 rear axle also has something to do with that but the truck just feels like it could tow a coal car up a pine tree. Hope this helps you.

StanleyZ:

did your mpg's increase with the DPF delete? I tow a 15,000 5er and love the truck ( I have the same truck as you), but she IS thirsty. 8.5 - 9 mpg towing.

as best I can tell I gained about 15% with the delete. Towing on the fairly level terrain of georgia and surrounding state I am now getting 10.0 MPG. Like you I was getting 8.5 or so before. Out west I had a lot of runs at 7.5 and a couple lower. Those were towing in the rockies or into strong head winds. I think I had one run at 6.5. I have not dealt with that kind of driving since I deleted so I don't know how it will do. I do know that I never got 10 before I deleted and on about 8 trips since I get right at 10 or a little over. I also knows that my first oil report came back better than any bfore. BTW my 5er is a bit heavier than yours.

Does your state smog check diesels? Mine does. I negotiated a 3 year extended warranty, the Ford Gold, everything covered....kinda hate to void that.

No, no smog checks. i guess they havn't thought of it yet. Like all the other governments they need money so it wouldn't suprise me if they started.

I have had three 7.3's and two 6.4's and to me by far I wish I had my 7.3's again but my 6.4 I have know has a lot more power but fuel mileage just really sucks!

My 7.3 gets 3-4 mpg better than my 6.4, but the
Ol school 7.3 is a snail on acceleration compared
to the 6.4.

I LOVE my 6.4L F350 SRW

But I wouldn't part with my 1996 either
