Polishing question

I'm considering a venture of polishing my trim. I did some research and found ways to polish the different metals. (Anodized, Chrome, etc.)

Trouble is, I'm not sure if my 67 f100 has aluminum, chrome, or anodized trim. I'm not experienced enough to tell. I tried to find specs, but was unsuccessful. Anyone know? I don't want to go the wrong route and mess it up.

Thanks

The hood emblems, hood letters and door handles are chrome plated pot metal. If you have windshield and/or rear window trim it's made of stainless steel. Also the door lock faces are stainless steel. The side trim and grille ( if it's not painted) are made from aluminum. You might want to check that grille with a magnet before you start polishing. Although they were never made by FoMoCo I have seen a couple steel grilles that have been chrome plated.

I forgot to mention, it's got a 68 grill in it.

Thanks a bunch for that info. The magnet was something I didn't think of.

68 grilles would be the same deal.

BTW, I like your avatar. Willie can flip me off any time.

The mods can be pretty tough at times but they are usually fair. There may well be a rule that prohibits it. This may be my imagination but it seems the mods are a bit more lenient toward Club FTE members. I got the proverbial finger smacking a few times when I first joined. After I joined Club FTE the smackings seemed to end. Did I get a little smarter or did the mods lightened up I don't know.

I've started polishing a grille this week. The grille is anodized it is hard and thick but when I got that first strip polished I knew it was going to be worth it.

to actually polish the anodized stuff you have to stip the anodizing first then you can polish it. Chrome shops can do this. dont attempt to grind or sand it off

I've got most of it done it's looking great. I started with 180 grit on a DA sander that get's the rock dings and anodizing out of the way. Worked My way down to 1000 grit and used a polishing pad and compound from there. Next break in the weather We get I should have it done.

Are you going to clear coat it or just re-polish when needed?

The attempts at clear coating I've seen turn yellow I don't know why. That's the down side of polished aluminum wheels valve covers or anything They require maintenance. Repolishing several times a year.

when you finally get it polished be sure to use mothers ultimate billet polish. its like 14 bucks a can which is rediculously expensive, but it will come out looking like a mirror.
