Strange Issues with a 89' EB.
Anyways, I jumped started my aerostar (again), and have a concern from quite a while. I did this in my driveway while in Park.
When ever I applied the throttle, the engine would hesitate immediately, almost wanting to stall, but then it would reach that desired rpm from the given throttle level no problems. I suspect that it might be a failing fuel pump.
Another thing... ok, lets have a contest. How long does it take for your aerostar to show signs of overheating (CEL, maxed out temp gauge) while in Park? For me, it was about half an hour from a cold-cold (sat for 2 months) start. I'm going to have to add some water/antifreeze pronto.
So, whats the bogging about?
The next thing would be the fuel system itself, such as the fuel pressure regulator, or fuel injectors. If the van has been sitting around for a while, then some of these parts may be sticky. You can check the fuel pressure by attaching a gauge to the Schrader valve on the fuel rail. The idle pressure should be around 35 psi, and go up to 40 psi under load. You can run some injector cleaner through the gas tank, or shoot it right into the fuel rail through the Schrader valve.
As to overheating, make sure you have enough coolant in the engine. If it does and it still overheats, even while idling, I would check for a leaky head gasket. Open the radiator cap and see if you can smell fuel in it.
